What is Minecraft?

Minecraft is a survival game developed and published by Mojang Studios. The game was released back in 2011, although an alpha version was released for public use 2 years before in 2009. Minecraft is famed for its highly influential gameplay that completely changed the sandbox genre.

The game is mainly popular because of the fact that it allows players to enjoy building everything they want in a world of their own. Users can gather supplies while evading enemies. These supplies can be used to build a variety of different things from weapons, tools, decorations, and more.

Minecraft features a very wide range of different modes for players to enjoy. There are also some great fan-made servers that have their own rules. Anyone can create a server and use it to play with friends or random players online. In short, Minecraft is a video game that provides players with both fun and great accessibility.

What is Terraria?

Terraria is an action-adventure game developed by Re-Logic and published by 505 Games. It was released in 2011 for Microsoft Windows. However, ports for consoles, smartphones, and other PC operating systems were also released later on.

Terraria features multiple different mechanics that it uses to create a unique experience.  The game is a blend of different genres, however, its main focus is exploration and adventure. Terraria also features a 2D perspective rather than a 3D one. This adds to the aesthetic experience of the game and makes it more unique than other modern games in its genre.

Terraria also features a crafting mechanic as well as good combat. Players can take different approaches while playing the game as it welcomes both aggressive and strategic playing styles. Users can opt to fight monsters and other enemies head-on or plan an approach while conserving the items in their inventory.

Minecraft vs Terraria

Many people believe that both Minecraft vs Terraria are similar games as they are both a part of the sandbox genre, however, this isn’t necessarily true. Both games are very different from one another in multiple aspects. Terraria excels in one aspect while Minecraft excels at another. Here are the main differences between the two popular games.

Gameplay

The main difference between both games is that Terraria is a 2D game while Minecraft features a 3D perspective. On top of this, Terraria puts a much greater emphasis on combat and exploration than Minecraft. Terraria’s combat and exploration features are both great. It feels like a true action-adventure game without any useless mechanics which is exactly why it is so popular.

Minecraft on the other hand focuses a lot more on building and crafting. The crafting mechanics in Minecraft are much more detailed and fun as compared to those in Terraria. Minecraft’s gameplay is also a little more complicated. Minecraft players require a proper understanding of the different mechanics of the game, such as crafting combinations, enchantments, etc.

Active Players

Terraria is far behind Minecraft when it comes to the number of players that play the game. As of 2020, almost 31 million people have purchased Terraria. This is a very impressive number for any multiplayer, however, it pales in the comparison of Minecraft’s player base.

Over 200 million people have reportedly purchased Minecraft and a vast majority of these people still actively play the game. Minecraft is one of the most played games in the entire world and the amount of players that play the game only seems to be rising.

Gameplay Modes

There are 6 different modes in Terraria that players can switch between. One of these mods is the classic regular RPG mode of Terraria. The other 5 modes are all different in terms of rules and some mechanics. These modes keep the game from getting repetitive and give players a number of different experiences to try out.

There are only 3 modes in Minecraft excluding the spectator and hardcore mode. These modes are all identical in terms of gameplay but differ in terms of features. On top of this, there is also the option to join public fan-made servers or create one yourself. As mentioned above, these servers are fun to play in and are all creative in their own right.
