Lucio is a character from the popular game Overwatch. He is one of the 7 support heroes available for selection in the game. Lucio is a fan favourite character, because of his jokes, very fun gameplay and great backstory Lucio immediately became a fan favourite following the game’s release. He has been a major mascot for the game and is known even by people that have never played the game.
Full name Lúcio Correia dos Santos, Lucio has always had a rough life. Growing up in a very poor and unstable environment Lucio has faced one too many hardships. He lived in a poor village that was significantly hurt by the financial upheaval caused by the events of the Omnic Crisis. To raise money for himself and his family, Lucio started to perform in the corners of the streets and try to gain what little money he could. Much to his surprise the people passing by loved his money and he earned enough to bring home to his family. After gaining so much popularity by just performing on the streets, Lucio began to do house parties and small events and was loved by the people that he performed for.
From simply performing on the street, to doing small parties, Lucio took a significant rise in popularity, he catches the attention of many agents and in little time started doing huge concerts. 2 years after this Lucio released an album which sold rapidly and made Lucio world famous. Even after all the fame, Lucio stayed the same and lived with his family in the village but now he was supplying the whole village with resources and help.
Because of this touching backstory, Lucio was adored by fans but that isn’t all there is to him. Lucio is one of the most, if not the most fun character to play as. His abilities make his gameplay the perfect level of difficulty, not frustrating to play and very enjoyable. But his gameplay has not always been the same. Overwatch is a multiplayer game so balancing changes are necessary for every character from time to time. Lucio has also been changed multiple times, receiving many changes, especially to his speed boost, which is one of the abilities that make him so fun to play as.
Lucio Changes
When the game was initially launched, Lucio’s speed boost was a bit too strong, making him almost impossible to hit and deal with, at one point making him slightly difficult to control as well, but now almost 3 and a half years later, he has been perfectly balanced to match the games play style and make him have his own weaknesses and strengths.
Information regarding any changes made to Lucio and other characters can be found in the patch notes, released on the Battle Net app along with every update. Lucio has had many many changes, throughout the release of the game but one of the biggest changes, or the biggest in general, that he has ever received came recently in the middle of October, when a huge ‘’re-master’’ update was released which brought huge balancing changes for every character. But Lucio was one of the few to get a significant change, getting a huge change for his speed boost. The patch notes from the time state the following along with a personal note from the developers.
Crossfade
- Speed boost’s effect increased from 20% to 25%
Amp It Up
- Speed boost’s amplification increased from 50% to 60%
WALL RIDE
- Speed buff reduced from 40% to 30%
Developer Comment: ‘’Lucio has had previous reductions to his speed that were put in place to reduce his effectiveness when boosting more than 2 tanks. Now that this is no longer possible, he is gaining some of his speed back. The Wall Ride change is there to counteract the increase in speed, so it should feel the same as it did before the change’’.
These changes have made Lucio into one his most perfect states in recent times and has made him the same old fun and lovable Lucio again.
