Both incredibly popular sandbox games, Minecraft and Roblox are said to be similar games where players (especially young ones) can build their own worlds and games, explore worlds created by others or go on adventures and quests with your in-game or real-life friends providing hours and hours of fun and entertainment. But even so, the two games actually pretty different from one another regarding gameplay, popularity, and even platforms, despite having similar block models for characters and world-building. Minecraft gameplay vs Roblox gameplay
Despite peripheral similarities, Minecraft plays quite differently from Roblox, utilizing various building mechanics to create worlds and items out of blocks of material and performing as a solitary experience to players as explorers and creative builders.
Played in either first-person or third-person perspective, Minecraft players either play Survival mode (where they gather tools and materials to survive and gain experience points), Creative mode (where players have free rein to construct anything they want) or Adventure mode. Roblox on the other hand, has entirely customizable playing modes with “millions” of games and servers available to players, focusing more on multiplayer gameplay where you play against (or with) your friends or other online players in a wide variety of game genres like shooting, strategy, mystery, survival and much more.
Game price
A big difference between the two games is the price tag. Although both games came out in the free-to-play generation, Minecraft has since priced its game in bundles and Roblox has introduced in-game currency for revenue generation. The Minecraft Starter Pack costs you around $30 and has all the basic contents, whereas the Master Collection bundle is around $50 and comes packed with the best community creations and even 1000 Minecoins (used for cosmetics and texture packs). Roblox, however, is free-to-play but relies heavily on its in-game currency, Robux (which you buy from real money). Most of the games are free but you still have to spend Robux to access more popular content and games and there isn’t much quality control. Even with Roblox Premium (a monthly subscription with Robux income), costs add up greatly despite the trading options.
Platform availability
Since its initial release on PC, Minecraft has expanded its reach and now exists on all major gaming platforms such as PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and even smartphones. Roblox was a bit slow on the take and, despite its apparent popularity, only arrived on Xbox in 2015.
Popularity
Despite releasing close to each other, Minecraft has had a significant surge in popularity since its release right up to its peak in 2013 and Roblox only managed to get that level of recognition in these recent years. However, players still have a great interest in both these games and you can always find servers full of players and creators alike. Both Minecraft and Roblox have known to surpass 90 million monthly users, which is impressive for any game.
So, Minecraft and Roblox aren’t as similar as you might have thought but both the games have an immense popular userbase and an incredible community behind them.
