Fresh 120 Catch-Up18 to 24Any active outer ringHigh on 400+ gearEquip lower pieces if high pieces lock too many rings.
Heroic Raid Prep33 to 38Two outer stacks plus middleMediumGood checkpoint for 400 to 415 Azerite pieces.
Mythic+ Push Set36 to 42Cleave outer plus utilityMediumUseful when movement and repeated pulls matter.

Tip: If a higher item-level Azerite piece locks an outer trait, compare its active score against the lower piece before equipping it for progression.
Tip: Treat defensive and utility traits as planned choices, not leftovers. They can raise the total score for tanks, healers, PvP, and high-key dungeon routes.

Azerite armors consists of helmets, shoulders, and chest pieces. Azerite armor includes a hidden ring that become active at specific levels of the Heart of Azeroth. Each of the rings within the Azerite armor have a specific level of the Heart of Azeroth that is required for it to become active.

Each ring also contains a specific trait that can provide benefit to the player. The traits within the rings depend on the level of the Heart of Azeroth. For this reason, Azerite armor must be consider as a system of armor rather than individual piece of armor.

How Azerite Armor Works with the Heart of Azeroth

The level of the Heart of Azeroth will determine how many of the rings within Azerite armor become active. An item of Azerite armor with a high item level may have an inactive ring because of the level of the Heart of Azeroth. An item of Azerite armor with a low item level may have active rings because of the level of the Heart of Azeroth.

For these reason, its possible for an item of Azerite armor with a lower item level to be more beneficial than an item of Azerite armor with a higher item level. The calculator included on this page can compare different piece of Azerite armor. The calculation uses the level of the Heart of Azeroth, the item level of the armor, and the traits of that armor.

The level of the Heart of Azeroth will determine how many of the rings will be active. The item level of the armor will determine how many level the player still needs to reach the item levels of the armor. The player chooses the role for themselves on the server, and the calculator weights the traits of the armor accordingly.

Tanks will have defensive trait weighted higher than other traits. Ranged damage per second (DPS) players will have offensive traits weight higher than other traits of the armor. The tables included on this page contain information on the thresholds for unlocking items of specific item levels.

In addition, the tables include information on the distribution of the traits of the armor according to offense, defense, and utility value. These tables can provide players with an idea of the value of the traits of Azerite armor before they equip any armor. If a player changes the outer traits or the defensive traits with the Azerite armor, the calculator will update the values of the traits to reflect these changes.

A common mistake that many player make is to ignore the center ring of their Azerite armor. The center ring will only become active if the player has a high level of the Heart of Azeroth and has selected the Azerite Empowered option. The activation of the center ring will provide an additional value of the Azerite armor.

Another common mistake with traits of Azerite armor is to ignore the importance of defensive and utility traits in comparison to offensive traits. In mythic plus (MP) and player versus player (PvP) mode, defensive and utility traits are very important to survival in dungeons and player versus NPC (PvN) battles. For this reason, fields are included in which a player can enter the number of defensive and utility traits that the player has selected for their Azerite armor.

When the item levels of Azerite armor is above four hundred, the level of the Heart of Azeroth is potentially a bottleneck for players. Even with three strong traits within a piece of Azerite armor, the outer traits will not be active if the player does not have a high level of the Heart of Azeroth. The calculator will show the total number of levels that are still needed for the player to activate the traits within the armor.

For this reason, it may be a better decision for a player to keep their older Azerite armor equipped rather than equip a new piece of Azerite armor with inactive traits. This field allows a player to select how many copy of a given trait are included within the Azerite armor. Azerite armor provides bonuses if a player has two or three trait copies of the same trait.

This field can be used to determine whether it is better to have three copies of a trait then to have a defensive or utility trait. While the calculator will show a baseline value for the Azerite armor that a player has selected, this does not factor in other aspects of the game that may make an armor piece with a certain trait more valuable than another with a similar score. For instance, a trait with an average score may be very valuable for classes that struggle with movement if the trait offers movement utility.

The purpose of the calculator is to allow a player to have a baseline score for their Azerite armor. Based off the score from the calculator, a player can make informed decisions about how to adjust the Azerite armor to best fit their rotation and classes. With these changes made, a player can have an idea of which pieces of Azerite armor are ready to perform and which are still waiting for additional levels of the Heart of Azeroth to activate.
