Chain check: if the target is lower than the start rune, there is no downgrade recipe in the standard cube list.
Gem check: chipped gems start at Thul to Amn, flawed gems start at Io to Lum, and flawless gems start at Lo to Sur.
High rune check: Pul and above switch from three input runes to two input runes per upgrade.
Legacy check: original closed realm non-ladder play cannot use the Dol to Hel and higher upgrade recipes.
Slot check: vanilla runes and gems are one item per inventory or stash square, so long low-rune chains need mule space.
Practical check: cubing high runes is mathematically valid, but the opportunity cost rises quickly with each tier.

Why You Need to Plan Your Runes

And when that last one finally comes together, that feeling is worth it. Not only did you get some sweet gear, but you understood the system to earn it.
