The concepts of stamina is one of the central statistic within the game for health calculation. Stamina determine the amount of health that a character have. The amount of health that a character have is dependent upon a variety of factors, such as the expansion of the game that players play, the specialization of the player, and the buffs that are active on the character.
For example, a level 80 mage will have a different amount of health than a raid geared Blood Death Knight, even if the stamina stats for each character are similar. The conversion rate of stamina to health is the first factor that players must understand. In older versions of WoW, the first twenty points of stamina provided ten health per point, and any additional stamina provide health at a much more modest rate.
How Stamina Affects Your Character’s Health
In the current retail version of the game, stamina is converted to health at a flat rate that is more than double the old conversion rate. Thus, the conversion rate change between expansion, which force players to change there expectation for stamina between these different expansion of WoW. The specialization that a player choose also plays a major role in how stamina affect the health of the player’s character.
Tank aura, for instance, dont simply add to a players stamina stat; instead, the aura multiply that stamina stat. Thus, a player that control a Blood Death Knight and a Guardian Druid will have different health stat for their character, even with the same gear for both characters. This factor is critical in determining whether or not a player can survive a rotation of their defensive cooldowns for the game, or if they will die before the healer for their raid can react to the damage that their character took.
In addition to the factor discussed above, there are also consideration of gear and stamina, as well as other source of stamina. While many players use an item level estimator to try to gauge the stamina that their character will have, such an estimator will only work correct if the player understand how stamina scale with level for different expansions. For instance, a level 60 Classic warrior will have a different amount of stamina than a level 80 retail warrior that wears gear of the same item level.

Add to that the use of a planning buffer within their game, which is also not health on the character sheet; instead, it is used as a way to determine how much damage their character can take before the healers need to begin to react to the damage that their character take. The use of these calculator and calculation for stamina is used to determine how many item will allow a player’s health to take a specific change once all of the multiplier are accounted for. For instance, a player may determine that it is better to have one trinket over another if it has slightly less stamina; the other trinket may be beneficial due to its other feature.
Similarly, food buff and feast buff may significantly increase a player’s health because of the interaction between those buff and their tank aura; however, such benefit will not be visible unless the player calculate these stats correct. Another factor that change between type of content for player is the priority for stamina. A warrior that is intended to play the open world content of the game will have different priority than one that is geared for Mythic+ content or battleground.
These difference can be made visible to the player by the use of a calculator for stamina calculation. The goal of all of these calculation of stamina is not to achieve the maximum possible health for their character, but instead to recognize what stat will increase the player’s survival in the content in which they are playing. Thus, after becoming familiar with how each of these variable interact with each other, players can make decision regarding gear and buff for their character based off this mathematical calculation of health, rather than making guess as to what might be beneficial for their character.
