💡 Vex Tip: Push one tree to 25 points before branching out - the capstone usually gives the biggest payoff.
⚠ Note: Vex tree details continue to be tuned in official updates. This calculator uses the current level 60 cap and the three named Vex trees.

Calculator reflects the current Borderlands 4 Vex tree layout, level cap, and breakpoint patterns.

Vex player must decide how to allocate there skill points, as these skill points will determine how the character perform during gameplay. Vex has three different skill tree, each of which provides the player with different advantages. The Dead Ringer tree allow players to deal critical hit that result in explosions that damage multiple enemy at once.

The Incarnate tree allow players to deal elemental damage to they enemies. The Phase Phamiliar tree allow the player to control a spectral familiar that can take damage on the player’s behalf. When the player reach level 60, they will have earned 56 skill points.

How to Spend Vex Skill Points

However, the player does not earn these skill points at every level. The player earn no skill points until they reach level 5. After level 5, however, the player earn skill points as they level up.

Skill points distributed too thin among the player’s trees will result in the player not unlocking any significant ability. Instead, the player should aim to earn 25 skill points in one tree to unlock the trees major ability (known as its capstone), before placing any further skill point into any other tree. For example, the player can first allocate 25 skill point to the Dead Ringer tree to unlock its capstone, then allocate additional skill points to the Incarnate tree to gain elemental damage ability.

Many player choose to use the preset play style that are available for the Vex character to aid in their skill point allocation. These preset styles are set up to allow the player to reach each specific ability breakpoint. For example, the critical hit burst build is focus primarily on the Dead Ringer tree to allow the player to deal damage with critical hit.

Another example of a preset style is the elemental hybrid build, which use the Incarnate tree and its status effect to deal damage with its enemies over time. Another preset style is the pet-focused build, which focus on the Phase Phamiliar tree to ensure that the player’s spectral pet is active the entire game. These different build may be the most effective for players because they are specifically design to reach each of these skill point breakpoints, such as the five-point tier breakpoint, the fifteen-point core perk breakpoint, and the twenty-five-point capstone ability breakpoint.

Hybrid builds are those that feature a split allocation of skill point between the Vex’s different trees. For example, a player may allocate 10 skill point into the Dead Ringer tree, 10 into the Incarnate tree, and 10 into the Phase Phamiliar tree. These builds are often less effective than focus on only a few trees.

While there may be many option available in a hybrid build, the player may not master each of the different tree to ensure that their Vex does as much damage as possible during gameplay. The best power, however, is if the player commit to only one tree for their Vex. This will allow them to dominate their game.

Before allocating their skill points, players should consider which playstyle they want to use for their Vex. Do they want to play aggressive all the time alone, or do they want to play together with others in there co-op group? Some common mistake for Vex players with skill point allocation are not focusing on the five-point and twenty-five-point skill point allocation, instead trying to earn an equal number of skill point in each tree.

This will result in underdeveloped tree that provide the player with mediocre ability. Another mistake is to use elemental swap in the Incarnate tree without also having some amount of critical hit damage from the Dead Ringer tree. Should the player not have enough critical hit with the Vex weapon, the player will have low elemental damage output from the Incarnate tree.

A third mistake is not invest enough skill point into the Phase Phamiliar tree to develop its spectral pet to the point where it can be an effective damage dealer in its own right once it reach the capstone ability of that tree. The different environment in which players decide to enjoy the game will affect their decision on how to allocate their skill point. For instance, if the player is playing by themselves throughout the campaign, skill point allocated to the Dead Ringer tree will be more beneficial than other allocation.

This is because this skill will allow the player to defeat boss quickly. If, however, the player is playing with others in a cooperative group, allocating skill point to the Incarnate tree will be more beneficial for dealing with damage to the group. Finally, if the player is completing the campaign for long period, the Phase Phamiliar skill tree is beneficial in that the player can collect loot while their pet protect them from enemy.

Additionally, because respeccing take scrap, players should test out the different build prior to committing to a certain allocation of skill point to their Vex character. Breakpoint are used to determine how to allocate skill point at each stage of Vex’s leveling process. For example, at 20 skill point, the player should focus on ability that are developed with basic upgrade.

At 40 skill point, the player should focus on scaling ability. When the player reach the level cap of 56 skill point, the player can use a hybrid build. However, professional Vex player suggest that they still focus on one of the tree with 100% of their skill point.

Action like Vexcalation or Here Trouble can tie in the different skill tree while still allowing them to be effective in their damage output. Vex player have access to a skill point calculator that allow them to test out different allocation of skill point. This calculator will warn them of risk in aggressive build, show if they have too many unused skill point, and may also provide reference table that show the risk of and the use for each Vex build.

Because Vex require some planning for the allocation of skill point, a player can succeed in completing the games raid if they allocate their skill point correctly to one tree.
