The calculator reports HP first to avoid the common mistake of reading fall distance minus 3 as hearts. Hearts lost are final HP damage divided by 2.

Armor material, armor points, and Armor Toughness do not reduce fall damage directly; the Protection enchantment levels are the relevant armor-side inputs.

The no-damage landing options are useful for planning saves; they assume the landing was executed correctly and do not model missed buckets, edge clipping, or server lag.

These examples are fall-damage calculations only. Separate hazards such as lava, void damage, hostile mobs, freezing, drowning, or landing misses are outside the calculator output.
Fall Damage is calculated based off gear, height, and landing surface. Instead of using hearts, it use health points (so there are no more mental division mistakes). Enter distance fallen from, what you landed on, and what protection you’re wearing. It will calculate how much health remains, your odds of surviving, and at what height you can safely fall with that protection. That way you know not only whether or not you’ll live but also by how much.
There is also damage reduction from enchantments which has a limit. Protection reduce all forms of damage, and Feather Falling reduces falling damage. These two combine into an overall 80% damage reduction limit. In other words, you can’t put both of these effects on together and get to 100% protection. For instance, if you’re wearing four pieces of armor with Protection IV and Feather Falling IV, that hits the limit. The calculator automaticly takes this into account. It will remove any additional amounts and present what’s realistic. This avoids overstating your amount of protection.
How the Calculator Works
The amount of damage depends on landing surface. Landing on a hay bale reduces your damage to twenty percent of the normal amount. Although that’s a huge difference, it’s not enough to make falling off a cliff harmless. Even with a hay bale beneath you, a hundred-block drop will be deadly. If you’re lucky enough to land on something like powder snow, slime block, or water, then you’ll take no fall damage at all! The calculator consider them no-damage scenarios. That makes it easier to plot out safe descents. Use slime blocks (or water) to protect yourself entirely.
Normal health: Absorption hearts sit outside your normal health bar and act as a buffer before your actualy health is touched. Temporary hearts buffer you by absorbing damage until your normal heart are depleted. You can add absorption hearts into the calculation using the calculator. This will help you decide if you could safely fall based on temporary buffs. For example, if you’re running low on health in the late game, absorption hearts could of make you live long enough to recover from a fatal fall. Because absorption hearts would initially take the hit, this calculation give you exact information when making a risky move.
Nothing protects you fully from gravity’s effects. No matter what, a fall from great heights will cause some level of injury. Absorption hearts and enchantments won’t save your life. They is meant to manage risks, not get rid of them. Know how far you can fall without dying. Use that information in your plans. Wear better boots. Put water down first. Don’t jump off those cliffs.
The chart on the page shows where distance are relative to damage by progress stage. Failure is part of Minecraft, as is experimenting. Falling happen a lot, and falling means dying (respawning). Turning those falls into strategy is what preparation does for you. It’s not a penalty; it’s a calculation. You don’t fear a risk, you weigh it. With the right tools, the right bucket of water, that thirty-block drop off isn’t so bad anymore. You understand how a game works by thinking this way. How far can I go safely?
