This calculator estimates crafting pressure and target odds. To resolve the exact seed-only result, compare the same pickup set inside the current Isaac run or a seed-aware recipe resolver.
There you stand, in a room full of pickups. Coins you picked up off the ground, red heart pickups. And there’s a bag here that can hold eight items. When you fill that bag to the brim with one more pickup, the machine kicks into action and spits out a result.
That result might make or break your run. It might cost you eight valuable spots in your inventory with something completely worthless. It’s not magic. It’s math. But because the vast majority of players view it less as a recipe book and more as a slot machine, it feels like luck. This calculator above will perform the math for you.
How to Use the Bag of Crafting
What really tells good runs apart from great ones, however, is understanding why the numbers move around the way they do. Quality points are at the center of the mechanic. Each pickup comes with an imaginary weight. Pennies and red hearts is light, while eternal hearts and Giga bombs is heavy. These weights is added up by the game to calculate what’s called its “quality band”.
Even if all the pickups you use add up to the same number, carrying low-value garbage in your inventory will keep your results at a mid-tier level. This happens regardless of which combination of pickups you use. And that’s where everyone screws up. They think about the theme of the picks rather than the raw mathematical value of the pick. Eight soul hearts don’t necessarily mean you’ll get an end result above average. It depends on the overall math for that quality.
On that page is a quality chart that shows exactly how many total quality points equate to each tier of result. There’s also another level of control from fixed recipes. There are some pickup combinations which never change, eight of any given type yields the exact same thing every time. Eight red hearts = Yum Heart; eight Portable Slots = Portable Slot. They’re consistent, and thus they feel like a safe place in the middle of the chaos.
But they also make things less creative. Need something really good? Want to farm up a rare item? Guess what: having all the same pickups isn’t going to work. You have to mix and match until you reach the right quality level but avoid getting one of those set results. That takes planning ahead and frequently means giving up the comfort of knowing what’s coming for the hope of something better.
Another thing to take into account is that pool pressure isn’t a vacuum picking items out of nowhere. Items pull from certain pools depending on their pickup type. Eternal hearts will pull more towards the Angel Room pool; black hearts tend towards the Devil Room. Dice shards and keys has an effect on the utility or Secret Room pools.
Why? Because that affects which options are even available. If you’re seeking a Treasure Room item, but fill your bag up full of only Devil Room components, you may end up missing because the game will look at the wrong pools first. With the calculator, you can see the pool pressure and how likely each pool is to become active. You can also see if your component combination supports the pool where your sought-after item actualy stays.
The wild card is seed dependence. At times, because quality varies widely and there is no exact match for a fixed recipe, what exactly comes out of the bag depends on the seed of the particular run. One particular bag made during one run will contain something completely different than another one produced from the same craft recipe but made during a second run.
There’s nothing you can do about this directly: all you can do is nudge the needle in the range of possibilities to try to steer the outcome toward a more favorable direction. Maximize quality. Align the pool pressure. Squeeze the odds. More often than not, you’ll get the random pick within a desirable tier. It’s a matter of risk management, not elimination.
Two common pitfalls include ignoring unlock status. Even with everything else satisfied, an item will never be craftable if you haven’t yet unlocked it. Filters for this fact exist on the calculator. The second is overcomplicating the mix. Having multiple kinds of pickups in your pool reduces pressure in the pool and makes quality estimates less accurate. Often, simplicity works better.
Pickups should make sense within your plan. Are you going for certain useful items? Are you looking for high quality treasure? Consistent choices in pickups lead to better results. So yeah, the Bag of Crafting’s ultimately just another way of turning scarcity into an advantage. It transforms all that stuff you might ordinarily dismiss as junk into something powerful.
As long as you understand the underlying mechanics, though: Treat those quality points like currency. Spend them wisely. Match your pool pressure to your objectives. Understand that the seed remains the final judge, because you can only ever optimize the odds. To master the bag, you must master that principle and get everything else right too. Fill in the slots. Let the game choose the rest.
You could of controlled how much it has to work to let you down.
