The skill tree is a critical component of the game and determine the effectiveness of the character that the player controls. The skill tree dictates the performance of the character in the game. Therefore, players must choose skill tree nodes that align with their playstyle to allow for optimal in-game performance from their character.
Choosing the wrong nodes within the Gate of Fates can make the player’s character weaker and more difficult to control in-game. There are clusters within the skill tree that pull the player towards specific type of builds for their character. For instance, some clusters will encourage the player to build their character for ferocity while others will encourage the player to build for wisdom.
How to Choose Skill Tree Nodes
Many players rush to the outer rings of the skill tree to gain the capstone nodes for their attributes. However, this can be a mistake as players should complete the core damage nodes for the skill tree before they reach the outer rings of the skill tree. The first 40 to 45 skill tree points is referred to as core points for the character.
These skill points are necessary to establish the damage that the character will deal in-game. These points should be prioritized before utility nodes as prioritizing utility nodes before core points will make the player’s character have slow rotations in-game. Depending on the character that a player chooses, there will be different strategies within the skill tree to accommodate the character.
For example, if the player chooses a ranged gunmage, they will need high critical hit chance nodes as there Railgun will deal more damage if it can pierce the health pools of their enemies. Alternatively, if the player chooses an ailment caster, they will want nodes that increase the attribute of wisdom so that they will have increased uptime for the damage-over-time effects they deal with their skills. As a result, players should balance critical hit chance and ailment chance nodes in the skill tree so that the character does not have low defense in-game.
Additionally, players should purchase mobility skills as they will allow the player to dodge the attacks or close the gaps between the player and their enemies in-game. The difficulty of the game will change depending on the content mode that the player chooses. Each mode will have its own required skill tree configuration.
For instance, Campaign mode will have low damage enemies so players will have the flexibility to experiment with their skill trees. Expeditions will have 35% additional health for the enemies so players will have to use ailment spread tactics to eliminate the groups of enemies. The Champion of Stormfall content mode is much more difficult as enemies have 70% more health and do 52% more damage.
Players must invest in defense attributes for their character to survive the damage from these enemies in Champion of Stormfall. Boss Rush modes will feature boss fights with a single target so players should invest in cooldown reduction abilities to kill their enemies in Boss Rush modes. The attributes for a player’s character are the variables that will determine how the player’s skills will function in-game.
These attributes need to be managed properly for players to enjoy effective gameplay from their chosen character. For instance, ferocity will increase the damage done to enemies with direct attacks from the player and toughness will increase the players life leech so they dont die too quickly. Agility will allow the player to perform their actions at a faster rate which is beneficial when fighting groups of enemies.
Wisdom will increase the frequency with which the player’s skills cause status effects which is beneficial for casters. Resource efficiency will allow the player to not run out of the resource needed to perform their skills. Finally, managing the player’s resistances and recovery rates will allow them to take less damage and gain health in instances when they are attacked by enemies.
It is a common mistake for many players to ignore point efficiency within the skill tree. Players who ignore point efficiency will ultimately weaken their character during the mid-game of the game. At level 90, players will have access to 112 passive skill tree points.
However, if players invest too many of their skill points into the outer rings of their skill tree, they will not have enough skill points to allocate towards the mid-range nodes. The mid-range nodes provide beneficial abilities to the character such as ailment stacks or tankiness. However, players should not select skill tree nodes that are incompatible with their primary playstyle build.
For instance, players should not select nodes that will increase critical hit damage for enemies whose primary damage is based off bleeds. Gear and enemy modifiers will have an effect on the performance of a player’s skill tree. For instance, unique items can change the ferocity breakpoints of a character.
Additionally, the enemies that a player fights will have modifiers to their skills such as stun immunity which may impact the skill tree that the player must use when fighting those enemies. A pure build will work for specific game modes but may not work as well for the overall game. For instance, the juggernaut class will work for the Champion of Stormfall mode because their defense will increase early in the game which allows their defense to reach high levels of toughness.
There are preset paths that can be used for player character progression. The preset paths will give the player’s attributes and chances good foundational values for their character. For instance, a player could choose a preset path for their character that allows their skills to perform best in specific modes such as a Bleeding Edge Raider path that will provide the player with benefits when fighting other bosses in-game.
When building the character, players should always consider their survival index and their clear speed. Within specific modes such as Champion of Stormfall, however, players must also remember to stack their defense to survive the waves of enemies in this mode. Additionally, in these waves of enemies, players must stack their defense for survival in Champion of Stormfall.
