Cooking Planning Tips
This is about cooking in Old School RuneScape. Cooking in OSRS is just a grind. “I’ll just level it up to 99,” you think, clicking away at fish for experience. It’s usually boring. But if you treat it as mindless grind, you’re leaving money on the table.
Planning makes all the difference between burning through millions of gold and training profitably. Before queuing up your first supply run, you must understand how market prices, equipment bonuses, and burn rates interacts. As you can see from the calculator above, it will do all the math for you, but understanding what those numbers mean is important too.
How to Plan Your Cooking Training
First off, set your current level. Then enter in your goal level. You’ll know exactly how many levels you need to gain. Next up is type of food you’re going to eat. Shrimp and trout rarely burns if you are even slightly above their required level, so early game training isn’t complicated at all. It gets interesting after that.
Things realy become interesting when you start getting into late-mid game content. Eating becomes about more than just increasing your skill; it becomes about managing resource.
What about burns? Burns aren’t an inconvenience. They’re money out of pocket. You lose money thousands of times over. Basically, trying to cook shark or swordfish on your regular stove is going to go horribly wrong and cost you a ton. The calculator adjusts for this, do you have access to the Hosidius kitchen? Do you have cooking gauntlets? They greatly change your chances of succeeding at any given run. How much less does your burn chance drop if you don’t wear the gauntlets? What happens if you completely forget Hosidius exists?
You’ll find yourself re-doing every other attempt, wasting half your time and getting zero additional experience. That’s how far off base your timing is. Your intuition also breaks down when it comes to estimating time. People tend to think they performs a set number of actions per hour no matter what they’re doing. This isn’t true. Spending all your concentration on cooking karambwan fruit on one tick will get you far more actions per hour than relaxing in front of a range while training manta rays and watching a movie.
You can specify this value as an input, this is extremely important if you want to make good plans. If you know you’ll be training AFK, stick with the default range numbers. Want to grind hard? Bump it up. This adjustment alone greatly changes estimated time.
Then there is profitability. Training cooking has historically been a negative gold sink. This has since normalized. Some ways to cook now can make money while levelling up. Take jugs of wine for instance. It give very good experience per action, there is no chance of burning, and it is good for your bank balance too.
The Grand Exchange does move around though. What was a moneymaker the day before may break even the next. Before embarking on a lengthy training run always check the prices of relevant uncooked and cooked food items in the tool. The page shows these in a reference table of most popular foods. This gives you a baseline to compare against current market trends.
Confusion also arises when it comes to stop-burn levels. People think if they reach a stop-burn at some level, then they’ll never get burned again. Unfortunatly this isn’t exactly true because the game’s calculation of probability doesn’t work like that. Yes, the calculator assumes those stop-burn targets, but in reality things will be a little different than. Play it safe and expect a small possibility of getting burned anytime below recommended level. By doing so, you avoid getting thrown off-budget by one random occurrence.
You should of expected this. In the end, all the choices you make when training must balance these three factors. Balancing speed, cost, and enjoyment Cost Speed For instance, some people like cooking Anglers because they get a lot of experience per action, even though it has a low profit margin. Other players enjoy Monkfish since it’s inexpensive so they can train without having to worry as much about their AFK time.
There isn’t any “right” way, just whichever one suits your needs at the moment. Beforehand, use tool to try out various options. This prevents you from realizing later on that you chose something that burns too frequently or loses more gold than its worth in experience points.
Preparing beforehand transforms the task into an opportunity rather than a nuisance. You’ll be walking away with fewer frustrations, intact funds, and higher skill.
