Tip: When comparing two gathering builds, change luck fields first and leave route fields alone. Then compare routes by changing nodes, route minutes, and competition only.

For 20 minutes, you’re standing over an Orichalcum vein clicking away with your hand cramped up, but still nothing fill into your inventory: no Tolvium for you. That’s either the game laughing at your build, or more likely, bad luck meeting math. Gathering isn’t a straight-up time investment, it’s a probability management system. Once you’ve got your route details and all the details on your gear, the calculator will do the math for you (above). Then you avoid wasting time wondering if getting that one more trophy slot is worth the housing price.

Seeing triple digit amount of ore pop up is satisfying, which is why most people focus solely on raw yield bonuses. That’s where people go wrong. Raw yield increases gives you additional junk materials to sell for silver, yes, but that doesn’t guarantee you’ll make any headway in your crafting recipes. A huge amount of yield may not unlock weapon upgrades if the rare resource pool is locked. This distinction matter because it impacts which gear slots you will prioritize.

Efficiency Is Better Than Luck

If you’re hunting for Cinnabar or Tolvium, then don’t bother with that 50% yield buff… Chase down that tiny amount of luck instead. Since these perks are always visible whenever you have a pickaxe equipped, you might as well consider them first. The most affordable option for more chances is a gathering luck perk on your tool. It requires only a single upfront crafting cost and no ongoing maintenance. Next are house trophies and apparel. These static, added bonuses will contribute their full value towards your overall chance. This means if you wear 2 pieces of +5% gathering armor with 3 pieces of +10% food buffing, those percentages won’t cancel out; instead, you’ll recieve the full value from each piece.

There’s no need to be rocking the endgame raiding gear to get any bang from those sources. Basic food buffs and a simple set of gathering-oriented armor can move you over the hump and into the range where you start seeing rares shows up regularly. This is important when plotting out your route. Node families behave differently, as shown in the reference table on this page. While Orichalcum veins are known to be highly contested (everyone wants ’em), maybe Ironwood routes will give you more uptime even though their base luck sensitivity isn’t quite as good. Sometimes speed wins over a perfectly built character when that perfect character is sitting there waiting ten minutes for nodes to respawn while three other people are farming the spot.

You have to account for real-world issues like player traffic, managing your inventory, and trips to the bank. The tool allows you to enter in a competition penalty percentage and it’ll adjust down your expected number of nodes accordingly to reflect these missed opportunities.

Don’t fall for endless strings of “luck” numbers, after you reach the area with high stacks (the “strong stack zone”), diminishing returns set in quickly. You’ll find a limit where you’re getting almost no extra benefit per minute from adding one more rare food to your inventory. At that point, it’s better to run around at full speed without any buffs. Sometimes a “clean” loop that uses less buff will out-perform a fully-buffed character who stands around half the day waiting for things to walk back to him. Spend some time logging how many nodes you actualy pick instead of just keeping track of how long you spent doing it. Forty nodes an hour? That’s the number that determines your throughput. The tooltip value that shows “x% chance” doesn’t matter as much.

Finally, gathering in New World is an exercise in efficiency versus statistics. On one hand, you’re hoping for some measure of good fortune that will ensure those elusive items are available. On the other hand, you hope you move fast enough to get there in time before they dissapears into the cooldown timer or someone else scoops ‘em up first. Take the presets as your launch pad, and tinker with the numbers based off your own equipment limitations and server population. Your objective isn’t simply bigger numbers on a display; it’s steady forward progress towards your endgame crafting objectives without exhausting yourself on wasted veins.

You should of tried different than the basics before. Stop chasing buffs and start timing your route for efficiency: in the long run, uptime wins over luck every time.
