Gold-equivalent value uses common planning rates of 21.75 gold per AP and 35 gold per AD.
In most long-form matches of League of Legends there comes a point at which the game transitions from a competition of skill to one of attrition. You have picked off your waves, cut off enemy’s flow of gold, and established an early advantage. Now what? Not only do you need to kill the opposing champion, but you also needs to know if your scaling potential will actualy matter when the endgame team fight erupts around forty minutes. That’s Gathering Storm’s lifeblood. It’s a gamble, one of those “high variance” picks for which patience is rewarded and calculation punished. Pick it blind to this curve and you’re effectively rolling a loaded die hoping it’ll come up on the side you want.
What’s it for? That brings us back to the core mechanic: how much additional power is required to turn one more attack into something meaningful? Forty-eight ability power by itself sounds miniscule. When stacked up against huge numbers that appear in an item’s tooltip late in the game, it sounds like pocket change. But put it through a high-ratio spell and suddenly that same number becomes hundreds of points of additional damage each time that champion cast. If they has a good percentage bonus as well, that rune become worth hundreds of points of additional damage per cast.
How Gathering Storm Works
Once you enter in your own spell ratio and current build state, the calculator above will do all of that work for you, converting those stats automatically so you can see exactly what kind of dent it makes in health bar. You’ll get a real idea of combat advantage behind those abstract stat lines.
The biggest thing that people don’t account for is timing. Making resources isn’t constant with this rune. It’s a series of separate bursts every 10 minutes, there is no ramp up in between. If you die and end the game in 25 minutes you’re really just running on a truncated version of what you could of been. You’ll never experience full last tier of progression. That means the benefit from an aggressive playstyle diminish relative to the value of the rune. Now it’s about surviving long enough to hit next threshold.
The interface itself have a reference table that spells all this out nicely. It tells you precisely where the next boost is going to come from so that you know how to time your decision making to match.
Another wrinkle with these hybrid builds are adaptive force. Depending on what stat you’ve built up more of so far, the system will automatically determine if it should gives you attack damage or ability power. What this does is set off a funky feedback loop in which you buy an item and suddenly your whole rune output flips over. For example, if you’re building as a marksman but buy some magic resistance item early, you could find yourself accidentally directing your scaling into physical damage different than the magic penetration you really need down the line. You can force the calculator to recognize a certain type of stat instead if you think it’ll get it wrong. It’s a nice fail-safe in case you make an accidental build choice that costs you dearly during a clutch fight.
It’s worth being honest with yourself and comparing it to lane phase runes. First Strike and Absolute Focus put up pressure right away. They let you win a trade now versus waiting for some late game promise. Gathering Storm asks that you get through the laning phase alive so that you can gets those benefits later. Die before ten minutes and promised power won’t come because you’ll be dead. That time investment will never pay itself back if you’re getting your butt kicking out of lane.
The comparison feature measure that trade-off for you. At what moment does the rune become more valuable than others? When does it overtake them in pure value? Where is the point where this becomes a better deal then taking something safer that works sooner?
All of this add up to one conclusion: This rune isn’t for everybody. Players with a deep understanding of when their champion gets stronger will get more out of it. Players who are confident in taking a hit early on should also find it appealing, provided they trust the game will last long enough to reward that decision.
Before locking in, use the planner to see if it fits your situation. Is it better to go after the rune spike or risk waiting until then to get dragon? Does the math suggest going after the rune first would give me an advantage at twenty minutes instead of thirty? All of these are strategy-based decisions, but knowing precisely how much bonus damage I’ll have at each mark informs what priorities to set. Let the numbers be your guide. Pacing yourself accordingly is all they ask.
