Most endgame caster trees stabilize around effective skill levels in the low to high 30s.

Tip: Cap core skill and two synergies first, then place leftovers into utility nodes like mobility, resist support, or one-point wonders.
Tip: If your FCR misses the next breakpoint by a few points, adjust gear before moving hard points out of damage synergies.

In Diablo 2, skill points are a limited resource that you must allocate to the skill tree. The way in which you spend your skill points will have a great effect on the way in which your character perform in the game. If you spend your skill points incorrectly, your character will be weak against the enemies on higher difficulty.

There are only two way to gain skill points in the game: leveling up and completing quests. If you level up, you will earn skill points. Additionally, if you complete quests, you earn additional skill points.

How to Use Your Skill Points in Diablo 2

The number of skill points awarded to quests increase with the difficulties of the quests that you complete. If you complete quests at Normal difficulty, you earn four skill points. If you complete quests at Nightmare difficulty, you earn eight skill points.

Lastly, if you complete quests at Hell difficulty, you earn twelve skill points. You should save many of these skill points for Hell difficulty as your enemies at this difficulty requires more powerful skills to defeat them. Your skill tree contain two types of skills: core skill and synergy skills.

Core skills are the main skills that your character use during combat. Synergy skills increase the effectiveness of your core skills. For instance, if you choose the Blessed Hammer skill as your core skill, you should also assign skill points to the Blessed Aim and Vigor skills.

These skills are synergy skills because they increases the damage that your Blessed Hammer skill does. You should always try to obtain twenty hard points for each of your core skills. Additionally, you should always invest in your synergy skills so that your core skills is as strong as they can be.

Your equipment can also impact your game in relation to your skills. Many item will provide bonuses to the level of your skills. For instance, if you have a piece of equipment that provide plus-all-skills to your character, then your skills will be more powerful.

Additionally, some equipment may provide you with a Faster Cast Rate, or FCR. FCR impacts your character’s casting speed. If you do not reach the FCR needed for your character to cast spells efficiently, then your character will be unable to defeat the enemies that appear in higher difficulties.

One mistake that players make is spreading their skill point allocations for each of their skill. If you allocate your skill points for each of your skills evenly, then you will not have enough skill points to some skills to be able to defeat the games more difficult enemies. Focus on only one of your core skill and its synergies and allocate your skill points to them.

Additionally, leave some skill points for your utility skills. Utility skills provides defensive or mobility abilities. These skills are needed for the survivability of your character in challenging enemy encounters.

Sometimes, you will need to use respec tokens for your character to change it’s skill tree. Respec tokens allow you to reset the skill points that you have allocated to your skills. You will only ever earn a limited number of free respec tokens.

Use your respec tokens when you encounter enemies that is immune to the skills that you have allocated to your character’s skills. Additionally, if your skill tree does not allow you to progress in the area of the game that you are playing, you should of used a respec token. If you use the core synergy utility method to allocate your skill points, you will likely not need to use alot of respec tokens.
