| Chains of Honor | 70% ED | Item ED % | Moderate defense with broad utility stats. |
| Enigma | +750-775 | Flat defense | Use flat defense instead of item ED. |
| Stone | 250-290% ED | Item ED % | Large defense roll for mercenary bases. |
| Check | Rule used | Output impact | Watch point |
|---|---|---|---|
| Strength requirement | Base strength minus ethereal 10, then requirement reduction. | Shows equip ready or short by strength. | Temporary strength gear can change readiness. |
| Socket count | Input sockets compared to max socket cap for the base. | Flags impossible socket plans. | Item level can reduce sockets on found bases. |
| Player ethereal | Ethereal durability is limited and not repairable. | Warns for player use cases. | Self-repair mods can change the practical value. |
| Merc ethereal | Mercenary gear does not lose durability while worn. | Marks ethereal as merc-friendly. | Still check strength at target merc level. |
| Plan | Preferred base traits | Socket target | Calculator focus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stealth leveling armor | Low strength, easy two sockets. | 2 | Requirement and mobility over final defense. |
| Enigma caster armor | Low strength elite or exceptional base. | 3 | Flat defense and stat efficiency. |

| Chains of Honor armor | Light elite with manageable strength. | 4 | Moderate ED and wearable requirement. |
| Treachery merc armor | Three sockets, eth optional. | 3 | Durability safety and socket validity. |
| Stone defense armor | Ethereal elite, high natural roll. | 4 | Large ED roll and merc readiness. |
The armor calculator provide a way for you to calculate teh final defense of armor in Diablo 2. Specifically, the armor calculator allow you to understand the effects of different modifier on the defense of armor. While the defense provided by armor in Diablo 2 might seem like an insignificant attribute of armor, armor can become significant for person who are building a character or equipping a mercenary.
The final defense of an item is based on the item’s defense number, strength requirement, and durability rule. For armor item, the armor calculator considers additional factor, such as the ethereal status, quality of the armor, and the enhanced defense from the runeword to calculate the item’s final defense. To calculate an item’s defense value with the armor calculator, you must enter several differently value for the item.
How to Use the Diablo 2 Armor Calculator
The base armor type determine the item’s starting defense value, strength requirement, and number of available socket. The defense roll of an item can have an enhanced defense value that is based off the item’s natural defense roll. For this attribute, you can use the policy to model an item with a high defense roll if you want to use large enhanced defense value for that armor.
Items with an ethereal status has a 50% chance to increase the armor’s defense value and a 10-point reduction of the armor’s strength requirement. There is also two different type of enhanced defense; superior and item. These two defense apply to armor in a specific sequence.
Any flat defense value, such as the Enigma runeword, the armor calculator can enter into a separate field since these value will not receive any enhanced defense multiplier. The strength requirement for the armor and the player’s available strength are important parameter for the armor calculator. These two attribute will determine if the character or mercenary can wear that armor.
The use case that is selected for the armor calculator determine how durable the ethereal armor will be for that character. Since mercenaries does not experience any durability loss with ethereal armor, this attribute is important for those who want to equip an armor with ethereal status to there mercenary. Another important attribute within the armor calculator is the number of available socket for the armor.
This value should of been entered into the armor calculator to make sure that the character does not try to equip armor with more socket than the armor can hold. Once all of these parameter are entered into the armor calculator, it will display the item’s final defense, its possible defense range, the strength value that a character still needs to wear this armor, and a readiness label for the item. The armor calculator is helpful in that it allow players to compare different armor set.
For example, instead of choosing armor with a high strength requirement, a player may opt to allocate more stat point to vitality. Additionally, a player may opt for a set of armor that has an ethereal status and high defense since such armor is a good choice for a mercenary since the durability issue of ethereal armor will not impact the mercenary. The armor calculator display a comparison of the different modifier for armor, such as comparing the difference between armor that has only been upgraded to superior quality to armor that is both superior and ethereal.
Many people will make mistake when trying to calculate an item’s defense because they will focus on the final defense value. Items with high final defense value may have a high strength requirement that prevent the player from wearing that armor. Players might also make a mistake with the number of socket for armor since they may not know the socket cap for the armor base.
Ethereal armor can also be problematic for players since the armor cannot be repaired and will eventually break. The armor calculator will prevent these mistake since the armor calculator considers all of these factor simultaniously in determining the armor’s status. There are also reference table within the armor calculator that display information about the armor base that you are likely to use in your game.
These table list the defense range, the strength requirement, the durability of armor, and the number of socket for each armor base. There is also a modifier table within the armor calculator to display the defense value of the different runeword so that players dont have to remember the percent value of each runeword. With repeated use of the armor calculator, players will begin to develop a better understanding of how to evaluate armor loot in the game.
Additionally, armor calculator preset will display information about armor roll for common armor type, such as Fortitude on Archon Plate or Enigma on Mage Plate. Using these preset, players can see the difference between a non-enhanced armor roll to the enhanced value of an optimized armor roll.
