Formula used here: raw recipe score equals the sum of the eight pickup quality values. Special Angel, Devil, and Secret checks use an effective score of raw score minus 5 before reading the output quality band.
There are eight slots. There it sits in front of you: the Bag of Crafting, filled to capacity with junk. Your inventory is also stuffed with red hearts, pills (maybe poison?), and cracked keys; your health is low, and the pressure is on. What do you need? There’s no guarantee of anything you’ll get…until you know how the game’s crafting system works. And that means knowing the system’s math.
Except now someone has done all the math for you with this calculator. Validate your current loadout against a known fixed recipe…or estimate the output quality band from seed prediction rolls…turn chaos into data. No more guesswork. Just plan.
How the Bag of Crafting Works
First things first: We’re talking about dynamic predictions vs. These are fixed recipes. In Binding of Isaac, there’s nothing variable about fixed recipes; they’re laws that hold true regardless of run seed or other items on hand. For example, if you pick up eight pennies, you’ll recieve a Portable Slot. No exceptions whatsoever.
On the other hand, most bags does not contain perfect sets of identical pickups. You’ve got a hodgepodge of stuff worth a lot and stuff worth very little. This is where the scoring system save your life. Each kind of item have its own value assigned by the tool. Rare hearts and golden supplies will send that number soaring, while common stuff like red hearts or poops will bring it down to earth.
All you have to do is choose which items goes into one of the eight available slots and calculator adds them up to give you a raw score. That number is important: It shows whether any given pool of items are actualy eligible for crafting at all. If your score is low, you’ll be stuck with basic Q0 or Q1 item from the treasure room. If your score is high enough, you unlock those elite Q3 and Q4 items, which is the game-changers. The page’s reference table spells out the bands plainly so you’ll know right off the bat what tier your bag qualifies for.
There’s also a twist with special pools which catch a lot of people off guard. These are the Devil, Angel, and Secret rooms. They require specific trigger pickups, like Black or Eternal hearts. Even then, however, game will basically penalize your score by five points, which is how they calculates output quality for these special rooms. While it feels harsh, it does balance out the huge amount of power behind items such as Godhead or The Lost.
That said, you’ll need a much larger raw score to earn the same quality tier in an Angel Room different than a normal Shop. Knowing this offset helps you avoid the frustration of crafting what looks like a great bag, only to end up with a mediocre item because you forgot the pool adjustment.
Besides checking availability, this also help players with their strategy by suggesting alternatives. Maybe you’re rocking a solid mix of pickups, but you’re missing the thing you need. The calculator will show what happens if you trade in one pickup for another, both in terms of probability and potentially getting a different target altogether. It makes you consider opportunity cost. Is that Golden Key worth retaining for a Red Chest, or is it better in the Bag where it’ll knock your score up into the Q3 zone?
Those are high level decisions; they make you look past single pickups as individual resources and begin to understand them as parts of a bigger chemical reaction. The Bag of Crafting isn’t so much about learning all the combinations as it is learning when to push what pools and at what score. That’s where the calculator comes in: It’ll give you the numbers. But your experience would of told you if the risk of a crappy roll is worth the possibility of a big payout.
When you get those rules down, and understand the score bands for each pool, the Bag stops being a lottery ticket; instead, it becomes a surefire way to keep the run on track. Walking into the room, you know exactly what you’re building, and turn that random hodgepodge of crap into a solid victory condition.
