Tip: If two spell routes are close in XP per hour, choose the one with better reagent readiness and lower downtime. The smoother route usually survives a full session better.

Don’t fall into the trap of thinking that casting the most powerful spell you’re able to learn will result in the most efficient magical training. Even if it might seem like a bigger number on paper, its typically an error. High level spells takes longer to cast and cost more mana. They are also often made of rarer reagents that deplete your pack faster then they give you XP.

How to Train Magic Efficiently

Mana is not only a cost; it’s also a temporal restriction. You have to spend your mana to cast a spell and then sit there until it replenishes. Casting a huge fireball (which requires 80 mana points) might take you longer to “recover” than it does to actualy make the incantation. While this high-powered spell yields more XP per cast, an easier apprentice spell may yield less XP individually, but at least you can shoot it off three times while the other one recharges only once. Sure you can figure out how many casts will take you to level twenty-five, but what happens when every cast costs one rare crystal and you only carry two hundred of them? And yes, it saves you from being stuck midway through a two-hour session with no more materials because you got too excited about casting.

Specializing in the correct school helps too. It is about using the spell that gives you the most experience per real-world minute, while accounting for every second wasted on failed casts, waiting for mana to regenerate, or managing your inventory. Magic should just be a continuous stream of successful spells; getting in the groove and sustaining the flow of spellcasting without running out of materials or exhausting your furnitures. It is not necessarily the one with the biggest explosion, but it’s the one that lets you keep a consistent pace for however long you play.
