Imagine this: You are clutching a great big soul gem in your fist alongside some steel gauntlets. An Arcane Enchanter loom ahead. You want to create powerful armor. How Skyrim Enchanting Works
Soul gems form the basis of all your enchants and is the weakest link in most players’ enchantments. Why? The main multiplier on your work are Perks: they double the results of what you do when they’re completely maxed out by the Enchanter skill tree. That means each point you put into the skill increases its value more and more as you go. It will dramatically increase the resulting size, provided you do so with some timing. Buffs last a brief amount of time. During vanilla play without modding, they last a couple of seconds at most. This means you have to drink, choose your item, and then enchant in nearly no time. Players commonly fail to catch this and end up confused when they feel like they should of get good results yet don’t.
For those who understand how to use this, potion loops take advantage of this system, creating exponential gains in enchantment strength through ever-increasingly powerful buffs. While it takes careful preparation, it reaps huge benefits.
Charge based enchantments like weapons work differently, as they use charge instead of being permanent effects. In these cases, the amount of time trade directly against their magnitude. If you enchant a sword with really high damage, that sword will run out of charges quickly, needing constant refills with soul gems. Reducing the magnitude just a little bit can dramatically increase your weapon’s battery life, turning it into more practical option for longer dungeons. You can play with this balance based off the sliders on the tool and see the exact number of hits you could expect from each pool of charges. It’s a matter of having bigger damage per hit or a longer fight before running out of juice.
More is added by dual enchanting, where you have to be at skill level one hundred to unlock Extra Effect and get two effect on an item. It doesn’t split the effect’s magnitude like in previous games (though it does raise the weapon charge cost). For instance, you can pair fire damage with absorb health on your sword or another offensive spell with some utility. While you don’t want to pair an awkward combo and waste its potential, the reference sections list what slots work well for what kind of effects. Amulets and rings are especially useful due to offering more than one slot to provide always-on effects without using up charges.
