Experience in Old School RuneScape, usually shortened to XP or Experience points, serve as a sign for progress in skills. One gets it by doing activities tied to that skill. Also killing monsters or finishing separate missions adds Experience points that players gather to raise their levels in those skills.
The usual way to receive Experience is to train skills even though other ways exist for that.
How XP Works in Old School RuneScape
One can win Experience through missions and special prizes, for example the book of knowledge. In the museum of Varrock, after finishing a certain group of missions, players can chat with the historian Minas about his displays. That gives prestige points together with lamps, that deliver Experience in the skill chosen by the player.
Like this not every part of Experience comes from simply repeated trianing of one skill over and over.
The formula of Experience in OSRS applies a curve with several levels. It means that a higher level requires much more Experience than a low one. There are tables about Experience that show how much total Experience is needed to reach every level, the change from one level to the next, and they extend from zero until 200 millions of Experience points.
Level 92 marks truly the halfway point by total Experience to reach 99. Getting to 99 in any skill requires huge time investment for most players, and one can enjoy everything the game offers, without ever reaching 99 in something.
To reach the maximum level in all 23 skills you need 299 791 913 total Experience. How much time that takes depends strongly on the training methods, the available money and the efficiency of the player.
There are resources like trackers for Experience in the OSRS Hiscores, that allow players to follow their own Experience prizes, compare progress with others and set high records for points. The client RuneLite even includes an Experience bar in the style of old school with little drops, that play upward when one wins Experience. Those tiny touches give nice dopamine excitement during proper training of skills to the top.
Talking about RuneLite, it works also on the Steam Deck. The touch pads and built-in buttons make OSRS playable in high quality without real downsides. RuneLite widely offers better user Experience than the official client most of the time, although it can be a bit difficult sometimes.
The game itself goes a lot beyond only the Experience grinding. The map is vast and fully open, there are plenty of chances for exploration and collection, and the story shines compared to similar MMORPGs. High-end content can feel like a rhythm game at moments with surprise depth.
Playing inyour own time without limits tied to time is a core part of what makes the whole Experience thrilling.
