Magic the Gathering, usually simply called Magic or MTG, came from the creation of Richard Garfield. The game appeared from the hands of Wizards of the Coast in 1993 as the first trading card game of that company. Thanks to that, it became the most liked trading card game globally.
Until February 2023, it attracted around fifty millions of players. By means of this game, folks can play spells and call imaginary creatures helping themselves by means of collected cards.
What is Magic: The Gathering?
The basics of MTG are fairly easy. Two players fight each other by means of his own decks. After only some games, one sticks to the main rules without big effort.
However the general rules stay surprisingly flexible, so one can in this way create huge variety of cards. When one plays a card, it commonly changes the rules for that occasion, what results in new play style and team effects. Although the whole is truly deep and detailed, it however gives big enjoyment simply laying the cards.
One finds lot of options for strategy.
Two main modes exist for play: Built and Limited. Each year appear several new collections of cards. Between them stands the format Commander, known also as EDH or Elder Dragon Highlander.
Community versions with official support of Wizards spread, where the tactics and card knowledge weigh more then spent money. Formats for budget players, as Pauper and Penny Dreadful, enjoy big attention in some groups.
Magic enjoys bigger popularity than ever. The stream of fresh players during the last years affected deeply the second market of rare cards, what raised the costs of strong decks in old styles. Hasbro pointed, that the income of MTG reached more than 1.7 billions of dollars in 2025, increase of 59 percent over the past year.
The game also crossed into the digital world. Magic the Gathering Arena downloads free and lets you fight with friends from any place. It includes great introduction, what makes it good choice for newcomers to learn.
Arena added also Best-of-Three after its first launch. Magic Online offers another digital option, by means of that players gather cards, form decks and fight according to his own rhythm.
2026 promises to be a unique year, with record seven main sets appearing before the year end. The Universes Beyond collaborations make big news. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles expansion will start in March, while the Marvel’s Spider-Man set is planned for June.
The Secrets of Strixhaven expansion will drop in April. There is even a Final Fantasy collaboration, with Starter Kit available at twenty dollars as simplemode to start.
