In Minecraft, Enchantment is a system that strengthens armor, tools, weapons and books. It allows adding one or several Enchantment types that improve already existing traits of an item or add entirely new ones. A glow appears on enchanted items so one easily notices them.
In Minecraft there exist more than 30 different Enchantment types. It is easy to forget which of them work for certain kinds of items. One can add Enchantment types by means of an enchanting table, anvil or game command.
How Enchantments Work in Minecraft
The enchanting table is made up of obsidian, glass, diamonds and a book. Think about it as a machine that uses a random seed each time one turns it on. After the seed is set, the possible Enchantment options stay the same, until one enchants something and a new seed is made.
The order in which items combine with books on an anvil matters a lot. Every time one works here, the cost for future uses grows. When the penalty becomes too high, one cannot add Enchantment types anymore.
In survival mode items are limited to six Enchantment types on an anvil. Later appaers the message “too costly”.
Enchanted items can also be found through other ways. Trading emeralds with villagers or piglins, sometimes one receives enchanted tools. There is a chance to find them during fishing.
Killing special enemies like zombies, drowned, husks, strays, wither skeletons or regular skeletons, they can drop enchanted items.
For swords there are some grate Enchantment types. Sharpness increases damage against all enemies. Smite is meant specifically against undead.
Looting expands the amount of drops from enemies, which makes farming for materials easier. Mending, Unbreaking and Looting on a diamond sword gives it an almost legendary feeling.
Armor has its own group of useful Enchantment types. Protection reduces damage from almost everything. Fire Protection, Blast Protection and Projectile Protection care about special kinds of wounds.
Respiration, Aqua Affinity, Depth Strider and Frost Walker ease motion and breathing under water. Thorns sends damage back to attacking enemies, but it uses armor durability and the returned damage does not really matchthe cost.
Enchantment of scissors, hoes or flint and steel usually does not deserve the time or experience. Unbreaking on scissors would help at least for removing big groups of leaves, even so it should not be the first goal. Enchantment of tridents first totally changes how one plays the game.
Tridents are quite rare and require hunting drowned, but after Enchantment they rank among the most exciting items in the game.
Early Enchantment helps a lot to reduce the grind and give real advantage against enemies.
