Talent trees in Darktide matter because your talent trees will dictate your characters performance during an mission. If the talents you choose for your character dont match the type of weapons you will use or the type of mission you will undertake, your character may experience wipes or a lack of damage output. However, if you plan your talent lanes before you commit your points into them, you can ensure that your characters performance will match the requirements of the mission and your chosen weapon.
Each class has three different talent paths to choose from. For example, Veteran can choose the Marksman, Tactician, or Survivalist path. Zealots has the Fury, Faith, or Martyr paths.
How to Pick the Right Talent Tree for Your Weapon and Mission
Psykers have the Warp, Control, and Discipline paths. Ogryn can choose the Bulwark, Cleave, or Support paths. Characters have 29 talent points accessible at level 30.
However, players must clear these talents behind five-point gate that players must clear to continue into the next set of talents. Players should not distribute their points too thinly across their characters talent trees because this could result in them performing mediocre in there matches. Instead, players should put all their points into one talent tree to reach a keystone ability that can provide them with a significant increase in their stats, such as damage or healing.
Some of the best talent nodes to invest your points into include offense nodes to improve your characters critical hits. You can also improve your character’s defense, mobility, or focus on eliminating specific enemy in your game. Additionally, you can choose talents that will improve your character’s horde-clearing ability.
The different types of missions that you will play will determine the best talents for your character. For example, for Auric mission, players can use hybrid builds. However, for horde-clear missions, Ogryn characters with cleave talents will be more useful.
Players can also use their weapons to dictate the talents they choose. For example, players that use autoguns will benefit from Veteran Marksman talent. Those who use a force staff will gain more benefits from Psyker talents focused on peril control.
Although there are many preset talent builds for all classes, players may not want to rely on these completely. For example, a preset talent build may be safe for the player but fail if the player and their squad have issue with the Psyker or Ogryn character. Therefore, players should use flexible talent builds that allow their characters to dip into support node talents to even out the weapons between characters.
Players should never ignore the five-point gate for their characters because putting all of the player’s talents into one of their characters lanes before they unlock the Tier 2 nodes may result in a wasted effort with their talent build. For example, hybrid talents will provide players with versatility but may dilute their keystone abilities; thus, they might become less effective at clearing elite enemy threats. Players should first select their primary talent lane and then choose their secondary talent.
The playstyle that players use can dictate their characters selected talent. For example, if a player uses talents that focus on critical hits for ranged weapon, they will want to take the Marksman path. Characters that use melee weapons will have more benefit from choosing the Fury or Cleave talent.
If the Psyker is leaning into control talents, they will want to take the Warp path. Players that play defensively will gain the most benefit from the Ogryn Support character path. Players should use their talent points to improve their characters performance in their specific playstyle to encourage high synergy between their character and their playstyle.
Players must also consider the composition of the squad that they form when choosing their talents. For example, if a squad does not have a horde-clear, then one of the Ogryn characters should have Cleave talents even if the player prefers the Bulwark path. Similarly, if the squad contains a Zealot rushing into dangerous areas, one of the other characters may use Veteran support talent presets or the Tactician grenade talents to support the Zealot.
Players should always adjust their characters talents to suit the specific needs of the squad. If players can find the perfect balance between their characters talent lane, their weapons, and the needs of their squad members, they will find themselves more successfuly in their missions.
