Exact results depend on monster level, treasure class, selected base item, quality level, and whether the item can roll that quality.
Diablo II’s Magic Find has a curve where more you add, the less it helps. For example, if you spend hours carefully gearing up to do a run at Mephisto and get a lousy drop, it could make you think that game is rigged against you. But the truth is: your intuition about Magic Find is probably lying to you.
This page will do calculations for you (and save you from having to guess at diminishing returns and drop weights). Is it linear? Not quite. It’s a curve, one that penalize you if you want to aim for higher percentages.
The Truth About Magic Find
When you wear 100 percent MF, you actualy get 100 percent of the benefit for Magic items. But if you have 100 percent Magic Find, that only mean 71 percent effective Magic Find when it comes to Uniques. Why? Because the game take all of your Magic Find and divides it by a coefficient (250 for Uniques), plus some base number. Any point of Magic Find you stack after a certain amount does not improve the quality as much. You stop getting efficient with stacking Magic Find pretty fast.
As you can see from the reference table on the page, wearing 300 percent MF yields roughly 136 percent effective MF for Uniques. This is where most players fall off. Why? They try to grind out an extra fifty points of Magic Find by farming slower routes, not understanding that they’re pursuing a diminishing return.
Time is what’s really limiting here. When you swap out a piece of gear for a Magic Find item, how long does it add to your run? Let’s say it adds twenty percent. You need to get an additional twenty percent effective Magic Find to come out ahead. Very few gear change clear that bar. Simply put, speed multiplies while Magic Find doesn’t.
The killer of the monster matter in this equation too. Whichever character landed the killing blow will be the one whose Magic Find stat is applied to the drop calculation. For example, if you play with a mercenary and your mercenary kills the monster, then the game factors in both your character’s Magic Find as well as your mercenary’s Magic Find. However, if you score the kill, your mercenary’s Magic Find doesn’t come into play at all. It might seem small, but it’s a big consideration that many people overlook. They neglect to consider what equipment their mercenary has because they think it won’t matter. But if the mercenary is doing all the heavy lifting, it’ll make a world of difference. You can toggle the killer source on the calculator to see precisely how much your mercenary is adding to your loot pile.
Player count matters as well as drop chances. There’s another hidden mechanic: NoDrop, which can prevent an item from dropping because of clutter reasons. How much this weighs depends on number of players in the game. If there aren’t as many players (fewer than 8) or if you’re playing a private game by yourself then it will sometimes reduce the NoDrop weight. That makes it more likely for something to drop. In contrast, if you play on a public ladder game with all 8 players, the NoDrop weight goes up. This means that even if you have lots of Magic Find, the game could still decide not to make anything drop. It’s a tradeoff. Sometimes there’s more opportunity to stack your Magic Find together when there are more players. But there’s also a greater chance that it just doesn’t gets triggered at all.
Magic Find doesn’t affect your drops of Runes and Gems. Equipment base quality is affected by Magic Find. Perfect Rubies don’t drop any more frequently because of Magic Find. Neither do Hellfire Torches. This is a common misconception. Pure Speed is what you want if you’re farming for runes. You want to take the least amount of time killing monsters so that you can farm as many as possible. Slowing yourself down with Magic Find gear is a net loss.
Use the calculator and tell it what quality you want, and it will help you choose between these goals. If you’re farming Magic bases for craft purposes then Magic Find matters. If you’re farming Runes, it doesn’t matter.
Magic Find isn’t about maximizing, it’s about finding a good balance. You don’t want too little magic find where you’re barely getting anything and you don’t want too much where you’re sacrificing run time. Once you get yourself to a nice effective Magic Find number for whatever item you want, stop. Stop buying Magic Find items. Start buying survivability items. Damage items. Anything that makes you kill faster is going to net you more loot over time than things that only marginally increase your odds of getting loot on any given kill. It’s unfair math, but it’s also fair math. If you can train yourself to trust the numbers instead of your instincts, you’ll be fine.
