This should sound familiar to you; it happens a lot. You build that lifesteal champion with everything but kitchen sink, thinking you’re going to drain your opponent dry while staying untouched. So you step into lane and trade blows. After only two seconds, you’re dead because unseen mechanics stripped your heals. But hey, you say, I didn’t know! Next time … or so you think, until you remember there are two sides to every battle: damage and healing.
How many lives you can steal on paper is beside the point. The relevant factor is whether your life steal comes in fast enough to match the damage you are taking at any given moment. This difference change everything about building for gear.
Why Your Lifesteal Is Not Working
The thing is, most people glance at their item’s tooltip percentage and stop right there. “Twelve percent lifesteal,” they think. “That means I’ll heal twelve percent of everything I do.” Combat is messy though. And your actualy uptime in a real match rarely look like the max possible.
The calculator above factors all that into equation: How many times will you land each hit? What’s your attack speed? How quickly can you keep your abilities off cooldown? It makes you face gap between sustained pressure and peak performance. And when you input your own numbers, be sure to check out the uptime field. Are you dodging skill shots? Kiting around monsters? Your actual healing go down dramatically, since you’re just not landing any hits. That’s where builds break down. You optimize for a situation that doesn’t actually exist on server.
But beyond all this, there’s also the anti-heal factor, which acts as a tax on your survival strategy. A lot of games apply some form of severe wounds effect or something that greatly decrease the amount of healing you recieve. And it goes into effect after any bonuses to lifesteal have been applied. So it hits your end-health recovery extremely hard. Having a 40% anti-heal up on enemies means you’re effectively getting only half of what you previously recovered. (And I mean “half” in the sense of “almost nothing.”)
The reference table found on page breaks this down nicely. While a moderate-lifestealing bruiser may be able to shrug off a minor debuff, the marksman who built for drain tanking? Suddenly they’re bleeding out. Can your build handle being without it’s main crutch?
Mitigation also plays a significant role here. When you’re tanky with high magic resist or high armor, it doesn’t merely save your life because it’s soaking up the hits. It’s lowering rate of fire on those hits so there’s more breathing room for your lifesteal to compensate. Less damage per second means you don’t need to heal as aggressively to stay in the black. That’s part of why certain people like running a bit of sustain and defense instead of going balls-deep with pure damage. It keeps things stable and offsets the cost of flubbing an auto attack or getting yourself out of position.
But don’t try for infinite sustain.” Only stay alive long enough to finish the trade you are in. To see if you’re doing it right, analyze the numbers. Your net pressure should be negative. You should heal yourself faster then they can hurt you. If your net pressure is negative, you’re healing faster than you are taking damage, giving you a sustainable lane presence.
This will save you chasing stats that seem cool on their own but crumble under team fight pressure.” Don’t guess about whether your build works. Figure out how long it holds up when the going gets tough. That’s more game-winning knowledge then any one item could of provide.
