Sometimes when you place a big order, half way through, you realise you are low on something like Starflower stacks. If you’re a crafter in World of Warcraft and you’ve tried placing a guild batch without a spreadsheet, then you know what I’m talking about. Planning often breaks down between knowledge of the recipe and materials required to make it at scale.
The economy punishes the single-minded thinker; it’s the one who plan in bulk that makes out. The tool help convert that single minded thinking to batch logic. Once you enter your order quantity, it do the math for you. There is no need to guess at how much per item or what fraction of a stack you need, since the rate change with profession.
Planning Your Crafting Materials
Base Materials vs. The first point is Actual Consumption. What goes in doesn’t necessarily come out 1-for-1 with what you put into crafting. For example, if you’re brewing potions (alchemy) or weaving bolts, each action will result in multiple items. It may be one potion per action, but it could also be three potions. Your inventory calculations fall apart instantly if you don’t account for this multiplier. To accommodate this, the calculator enable you to tweak the base output per craft. Instead of specifying the final stack size, you specify the number of actions you intend to take.
Why does it matter? Your cooldown restrictions is based off the actions, not the items they create. You should of consider rank and quality as well. While higher rank just looks nice on your tooltip, it also bumps you up into a different quality band which affect failure rate and market value. Using premium materials does not mean you’ll get a high-quality item if your effective skill is lower than what’s required for the recipe. You’re going up against the math. Run your quality band by the item before you drop a lot of coin on those rare ores/other items. It saves you from over-spending on reagents that won’t be used efficienty given your current gear.
Multicraft and resourcefulness are another way to say “chaos” in the midst of a linear process. Efficiency has many definitions, but making multiple things at once and being resourceful inject it into a linear system. This means you don’t always make one unit of something from one unit of some other thing. Sometimes you save money, sometimes you produce extra free stuff, and more often, you never get either. Your bankroll stays intact when you plan for the average case instead of the best case. That’s why the tool calculates that variance and allow you to view a realistic net cost (not just an optimistic minimum).
Players who fail here are those who plan for perfection. Random numbers generate no such thing. When building your material budget, include your margin for error up front; then even a bad luck streak won’t wipe out your profit.
This leads into another wrinkle most people overlook until they have a sack of Spark of Inspiration dust: recrafting. Recrafting takes some extra materials, changes an enchantment or stat, and reuses the item. You can split this off from your first crafting order in the calculator. That’s important because the materials used for recrafts tend to be more difficult to obtain and costlier than the base components. You don’t want those mixed in with the rest since then you won’t know how much money you’re throwing away on revisions vs what they’re paying you. Separating them gives you insight into whether a customer change request is worthwhile. It could just take away all your profit margin.
And lastly, there’s the time gate. Certain crafts has daily/weekly limits where no matter how many materials you may have, you can’t make as much during that time. You might have ten thousand stack of cloth but if you can only make five bolts per day, it doesn’t do you any good. By making you input a cooldown, you’re forced to face up to this fact and plan accordingly (i.e figure out how many days until you can finish your order). It transforms your material issue into a scheduling one, which is something that tends to be easier to solve than chasing down random rare ingredients when they go crazy on the auction house.
So it’s not so much about learning the recipes as it is about working within the constraints. There are only so many materials. There is only so much time. There is only so much good or bad luck. The problem is, they’re pulling in different directions. When you define what goes into your craft clearly and accept that some change will occur through bonus mechanisms, then you no longer react to shortages, but prevent them. Instead of walking into that crafting table praying, you’ve got a plan.
