The timer begins and your damage per second seem pitifully low. Your gear is spot-on. Your set bonus is just right. You’re loaded with raw damage necessary to kill any normal boss. What’s wrong? It isn’t elemental resistances or lack of talent points. It’s almost always attack speed.

Time is damage in Diablo 3. If you waste even one frame sitting around waiting for an animation to complete, then that’s a frame in which you didn’t hit the monster. Knowing what those frames add up to can be the difference between topping the leaderboards and scratching your head wondering why your build feels sluggish.

Why Attack Speed Matters

The game runs at sixty frames per second. Sixty frames per second is more than a simple percentage shown in a tooltip. Sixty frames per second is more than decimal numbers on your character sheet that seem to increase at a steady rate. Five percent attack speed on your gloves means five percent more damage, right? Nope. That’s not how it works in real life.

Each animation get rounded down to the next whole frame by engine. Dropping it to 39.2 frames will actualy snap it back up to forty because the game only recognize integer steps. That rounding makes no difference when you look at your character sheet but it speaks volumes when you play. The calculator up top converts raw percentages into frame counts and then tells you if that jewelry roll was worth it. It tells you if it moved the needle or if it was dead weight.

Attack Speed (AS) is the thing that makes a lot of players go “I need as much AS as I can get!”. On one hand, having high AS results in hitting enemies more times per second. So if you build around generating resources or procs, this is fantastic. If things happen more often, it’s better, right? But here’s the catch: Most abilities that have high AS will also has lower base damage. High AS means taking quick jabs at an enemy, while lower AS means doing bigger damage with fewer shots.

It all comes down to the proc coefficient of your skill(s). Does your ability only use a part of your AS for proccing? For example, some skills only count a fraction of your attack speed toward triggering effects. If you’re running a skill with a low coefficient, you might not be able to stack tons of AS and see the effect proc any quicker since the game’s going to use that lower number when calculating your chances of proccing.

Pet builds face a similar but distinct puzzle. Attack speed of your character doesn’t realy impact the speed at which your called minions attack. You don’t get your wizard swinging his staff faster, so you don’t get the Fire Hydra to spew fire quicker. Instead, the Hydra will attack based off its own internal timer. Attempting to min-max pet breakpoints means looking at totally separate tables different than those of traditional melee fighters. You can toggle into pet breakpoint mode, where your own weapon speed doesn’t matter and only the minion’s tick rate counts. This separation lets you focus on the minion’s stats and ignore your own. Otherwise, you’re wasting paragon points on stats that benefit you as the player, but do nothing for the summons doing all the heavy lifting.

Dual wielding adds another level of difficulty for new players. The game applies a fifteen percent bonus for holding weapons in each hand. However, it does this before any other bonuses and after base speed. So, the actual boost in efficiency may not be as high as it seems at first glance. For example, switching over to more efficient daggers may seem like an easy improvement, but if most of your damage is being done through spells, which don’t even factor in attack speed whatsoever, then those daggers are nothing more than fancy playthings.

The tool also includes some handy reference tables listing typical weapon speeds, so you can easily compare how a pair of dual pistols stacks up to a big ol’ two-handed greatsword without whipping out your spreadsheets.

So what’s the ultimate solution for Diablo 3 performance? Maximizing isn’t realy the goal, efficiency is. If you can get just enough speed to meet the next frame break point, then stop pursuing the goal of maximum speed until you run out of other stats like cooldown reduction or critical chance. If you gain an additional three percent attack speed which doesn’t reduce your animation time at all, it won’t do anything for you. It’ll simply remain on your build, wasting valuable space and not giving any benefit.

Knowing when to quit running down the rabbit hole of diminishing returns is one of those things you should of learned over time. The game will literally show you exactly where the line is with regards to frames. When you start thinking in terms of intervals and ticks instead of raw numbers, you stop perceiving the game as random and begin seeing it as engineered.
