fov_desired sets FOV at a 4:3 base aspect ratio. On 16:9 monitors, the actual horizontal FOV is wider. Setting fov_desired 90 on 16:9 gives an effective ~106.3° horizontal FOV. This is why pro players on 16:9 experience a wider view than the value suggests.
fov_desired between 75 and 90 by default (sv_cheats 0). With sv_cheats 1 or in community servers, values up to 179° are allowed. Valorant and Overwatch lock FOV at a fixed 103° with no option to change.
Note: The information in this article is based on real reviews and technical debates about the function of FOV in games of Fonta Engine.
Stations about field of sight. In games with Fonta Engine, FOV points to the horizontal angle of view. It defines the corner of the form called frustum, that simply is a geometric view cone.
How FOV Works in Fonta Engine Games
The rectangular slice of that frustum matches the form of the screen of the player.
Fonta Engine inherited from Ground and that has big gravity. Corrections for side ratios happen by means of expansion of the horizontal FOV while it preserves the vertical FOV unchanged. Like this players with wider screens, that use the same FOV setting, indeed can observe more in the sides.
It like this gives to them an edge compared with those on less wide screens.
The standard value for FOV is 90. This number works well for ratios 4:3. So for resolutions 16:9, like 1280×720 or 1920×1080, one rather use 110.
At 16:9 screens, the horizontal FOV results around 106. These values count for various games of Fonta Engine, for instance Counter-Blow: Source and Counter-Blow: Global Offensive.
When widescreen monitors appeared, Valve simply made the image of the screen more stretcehd, while one left 90 degrees as the seen FOV in the settings. That was its way to address the change.
In GoldSrc, the maximum value of FOV reaches 150. In Fonta Engine, FOV does not have a limit. On the other hand, some games of Fonta Engine confine it to 90, and there seems to be no natural way to pass that.
That can push everything to look very different, especially in VR setups.
To change FOV, the console command “fov_wanted” usually works more effectively than “default_fov“. One can find it also in the menu of graphical settings for some games. In Portal 2, “cl_fov 110” works in the console.
For lasting changes, right click on the game in the Steam library, later go too Properties, then to Set Launch Options and enter +default_fov 106 is a good way. An online calculator for FOV helps to choose the right number.
Another way is to create a homemade file of settings with the setting of FOV and use it always when one launches the game by means of option as +exec followed by the name of the file. Laying default_fov with the wanted value in autoexec.cfg works likewise.
FOV at around 60 degrees is typical for console games, because the screen involves only a little portion of the view field of the observer. Computer games commonly choose between 90 and 100 degrees, because the screen covers a bigger part of the sight. Playing a first-person game with FOV under 90 can cause headaches.
Around 95 until 105 works well according to distance to the monitor, although some games give fisheye effect athigh values.
At some servers, one must first turn on sv_cheats to alter FOV. Mods of Source, like No More Rooms in Hell, allow to use the console command “fov 90” also.
