🌡️ Thermal Paste Lifespan Calculator
Estimate how long your thermal paste lasts after opening — in tube or applied on your CPU/GPU
| Compound Type | Sealed Life | Opened (Tube) | Applied on CPU/GPU | Ideal Temp Range |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Silicone-Based (Arctic MX-4, MX-6) | 3–4 years | 1–2 years | 2–3 years | 15–25°C / 59–77°F |
| Metal / Liquid Metal (Conductonaut) | 5–6 years | 2–3 years | 3–5 years | 15–25°C / 59–77°F |
| Carbon / Graphite (Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut) | 4–5 years | 1–3 years | 3–4 years | 15–25°C / 59–77°F |
| Ceramic (CM Mastergel, Noctua NT-H1) | 3–5 years | 1–2 years | 2–3 years | 15–25°C / 59–77°F |
| Storage Temp | Temp (°C) | Temp (°F) | Life Multiplier | Effect |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cool | 10–18°C | 50–64°F | +20% longer | Slows oxidation, extends life |
| Ideal | 18–25°C | 64–77°F | Baseline (100%) | Optimal storage conditions |
| Warm | 25–35°C | 77–95°F | -25% shorter | Accelerates drying and separation |
| Hot | >35°C | >95°F | -40% shorter | Rapid degradation, pumping effect |
| Warning Sign | What It Means | Action Required | Urgency |
|---|---|---|---|
| CPU temps increased >10°C | Paste has dried out or cracked | Reapply immediately | 🔴 High |
| Paste looks crumbly/dry in tube | Oil separation or expired | Discard and replace tube | 🔴 High |
| Thermal throttling under load | Inadequate heat transfer | Clean and reapply | 🔴 High |
| Paste is 3+ years old (applied) | Routine maintenance interval | Schedule reapplication | 🟡 Medium |
| Paste color looks grey/faded | Compound breaking down | Inspect more carefully | 🟡 Medium |
| Tube paste is still smooth & tacky | Paste is still usable | Continue using normally | 🟢 Low |
Thermal Paste has many names. One also calls it thermal building, thermal fat, thermal paste, thermal gel, fat for CPU, heat sink and thermal interface material or simply TIM. No matter what name one uses, the task stays the same.
It sits between the chip and the cooler to help move the heat away from the chip.
What thermal paste is and how to use it
Surfaces of processor chips and bases of coolers are covered with tiny little holes and bumps. Those tiny gaps trap air, that is a good blocking material. That stops heat from moving freely.
The Thermal Paste fills those spaces and makes it possible for heat to transfer a lot more from the warm CPU cover to the cooler. Without it, the chip could not cool as well as it needs.
Big deposit does not help. If one applies too much paste, it increases the thermal resistance, instead of lowering it. Enough amount is no more than half a pea for a pair of CPU and cooler, whether in laptops or in desktops.
The deposit of paste must be as thin as possible, yet cover the whole surface.
The way to apply the paste also matters. One way is to lay a little drop in the center and leave the cooler to spread it during pressure down. The X-shape is another favorite method, because it reduces risk of air bubbles.
One can spread it before with a card, but there is danger of trapping air pockets, if the surfaces of CPU or cooler are not perfectly flat. Start with a blob or X-shape to help push the air outside, when one presses.
There are several brands available. The Arctic MX-4 is liked, because it is easy to work with and works well. Arctic makes also the MX-5, MX-6 and MX-7.
The MX-4 uses carbon tiny bits to fill the little surface holes, which gives it high heat transfer skill and quickly removes heat from CPU or GPU. The Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut is another well known option, that shows good results in tests, but it costs a lot more. The Noctua NT-H1 is a reliable choice, that does not contain metals.
Liquid metal pastes, like the Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut, work four gross cases, but one does not suggest them for everyday use.
Coolers from sellers commonly come with pre-applied paste, and such paste can last for years. One computer worked well eight years with the original paste. Even so, heavy use and high heats can wear it out more soon.
Removing and replacing old paste in a laptop commonly lowers thetemperatures clearly. Quality of the paste and careful application both matter to reach good results.
