| Factor | Impact on Runtime | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Battery age (2–3 yrs) | −25 to 30% | Replace every 3–5 years |
| High temperature (>30°C) | −10 to 20% | Reduces battery life significantly |
| High load (>80% of rated) | −Exponential | Runtime drops sharply near full load |
| Low efficiency UPS | −10 to 15% | Older or cheaper units more affected |
| Frequent discharge cycles | Gradual capacity loss | Lead-acid: ~500 full cycles |
| Inductive loads (motors) | Surge draw reduces effective time | Use VA rating for these loads |
UPS, or continuous Power Supply, is a device that delivers back-up energy to connected devices when the main electricity fails. It works as an outside battery with a switch for devices, so that during a power outage everything stays working for a bit of time.
Three main parts find themselves in UPS: rechargeable batteries, an inverter and a system for electronic control. The main part detects the absence of electricity and right away starts the batteries. When the main power works, the device resets the combined batteries so that they stay ready.
What a UPS Is and How to Choose One
The length of the battery depends on its size so the run time relates to the capacity of the UPS and the size of the batteries.
Various kinds of UPS are available. Models with linear interaction automatically fix problems of voltage that could hurt electronics, and at the same time give brief reserve during power outage. There are standby types, line-interactive and double-converted versions, with battery reserve skills of 350 VA up to 10 000 VA.
An important spot to recall is that numbers in VA do not match to watts, so always check the watt value aslo during purchase.
UPS not only helps to keep work during power outage. It protects against brown outs, automatic stops of safety circuits and overloads. The device cleans the power voltage of the energy used by computers, passing it through battery and rectifier to give clean and stable flow.
When dealing about new computer Power Supply units, mind the difference between real sine wave and fake sine wave is important. Modern efficient Power Supply units require truly clean energy with low harmonic distortion.
For computers used for gaming, care that the UPS fits too bear the whole power of the computer, the screen and the extras. Check the power of the Power Supply and choose UPS with bigger capacity. UPS of 1500 VA, rated at 900 watts, give pure sine wave for back efficient system.
For Power Supply of 550 W, choose UPS in at least 1000 up to 1500 VA, which is a good solution. UPS is meant to only give time to safely close the computer, not for long play.
Batteries need replacing almost every three to five years. If you do not test the UPS by means of turning it off the wall, there is no good way to judge the state of the batteries. Plan before the cost for back-up batteries.
In that field famous marks are APC, CyberPower, Eaton, Schneider Electric and Mitsubishi Electric. APC offers lines like the Back-UPS Professional Gaming. CyberPower has awarded back-up devices fit for home and office.
Laying network devices like modem and routers on a different UPS helps to keepthe internet access during longer power outages.
