Black Myth: Wukong is a role-playing game of 2024, created and launched by Game Science. The game has deep roots in Chinese mythology, with plot inspired by Journey to the West, one of the four big classical novels in Chinese literature. The player takes the role of the Chosen one a monkey that goes on an adventure to recover six relics bound to the six feelings of Sun Wukong.
The game operates on Unreal Engine 5 and offers truly impressive graphics. One called it owner of some of the best images since Cyberpunk 2077, although it can push even RTX 4090-card in the highest setting. Special scaling tools were created to control heavy load and hardware fit by means of real-time analysis of in-game sequences.
Black Myth: Wukong Game Review
There is a lot of debate whether one could call the game soulslike. It builds on solid action with skill trees and key combo attacks. There appear features similar to games of FromSoftware, for instance recovering health mode that is similar to usage of the Estus Flask, and checkpoints reminding about bonfires.
Even so on the whole, the gameplay leans more to fast action. The game reaches great harmony between souls-like feeling and more dynamic combat.
Black Myth: Wukong has several skill trees that cover various systems, between which personal attitudes, spell types, metamorphoses and statistical boosts. The skill spots, called Sparks, one can freely reset. The draft lasted in development during almost six years before the publication.
The boss fights form the main attraction. The game gives thrilling fights with monsters from Chinese folklore. For instance, one boss is Guangzhi, wild wolf-like creature that trained at temples and wields a fiery double-sided spear called The Red Tides.
On the other hand, the breaks between those heavy fights sometimes can seem a bit small.
It is playable on the Steam Deck, although some compromises are needed. It reaches stable 30 FPS in 720p resolution with low settings, wear textures and shades drop to middle values. Even so, there are some spots to note on that device.
In Metacritic, the game has now a score of 82 from 48 reviews, what sits in the “widely positive” category. It adapts the classical story of Journey to the West and adds its own spin to the events, while providing firm and visually impressive action RPG. The game is full of mythological elements and aims to be a challenging experience.
In hours after thelaunch on August 20th, it jumped to the first place in the bestselling list.
