Marvel Rivals is a team-based PvP shooter with superheroes, that puts players directly in the Marvel Universe. Netease Games created it together with Marvel Games, and the game launched globally on December 6th 2024 for PlayStation 5, Windows and Xbox Series X/S, with a version for PlayStation 4 soon later. The best part?
It is free and all heroes are available right from the first day, without any paywall in the path.
Marvel Rivals: Free 6 against 6 Superhero Game
The game focuses on 6-against-6 matches, where you form teams using famous Marvel characters, heroes, antiheroes and villains mingle everywhere. What makes it speical is the Team-Up rule, that allows you to combine heroic skills to create special forces, that forces you to think about tactics. Also the maps can break, so that battlegrounds change during the match, and everything stays fresh every time you enter.
The heroes mostly lean toward Duelists, they are your attackers, that mostly care about damage to opponents and creation of deadly moments. Strategists form the smaller part as helpers, that focus on healing and team support. Currently there are around 11 Strategists in the game, but more will arrive soon.
Key note: there is no role lock, so you can choose anything that you like, without being bound to one single task.
The creators mentioned that they have permission to use any character from 85 years of Marvel Comics and make them playable heroes, and they do not hesitate to be creative in the choices. The 5th season introduced Gambit and Cable, two of the most famous pairs from the X-Men. There is also talk about characters like the Ghost Rider, such as Robbie Reyes and Johnny Blaze, that maybe will come more later.
The simplest way to get the game; it is free in the Epic Game Store and on Steam. Especially on Steam, it reached 644 269 simultaneous players on January 11th 2025, which was the record peak. It works also on the Steam Deck, which is great, because before the alpha versions did not support that portable device.
The year 2025 is the first full year, when Marvel Rivals works as a live-service game.
Through the year, special events are planned. In April, June, August and October, expect new seasons, that tie directly too the Avengers films. The system for hero progress recently updated, opening fresh ways to earn prizes.
Those who reach good results will receive early access to the plan for 2026… It promises new heroes and places from the comics, shows and films.
Balance for casual players does not always work. Design for skilled players in mind tends to create healthier play overall, because the chance to show skill keeps folks engaged and gives them a target to work toward. Some heroes remind you of Overwatch, but some Marvel Rivals characters bringgenuinely new abilities to the mix.
