Note: Here some samples from actual discussions in the Terraria community and data of the wiki.
DPS… So damage each second; really matters a lot in Terraria. The biggest part of the class changes depend on that how many damage one can deal permanently.
DPS Meter in Terraria and How to Use It
The DPS metre is a useful tool, that follows the DPS of any weapon, that one uses to strike a target. It tracks enemies, pets, NPCs, target dummies and even other players in multiplayer modes. Even so it works only in the desktop, console and mobile versions.
To get the DPS metre, you must search the Travelling Dealer, that appears randomly and without warning. Sometimes he can disappear for four game days or even more long, without any warning. There is no truly reliable way to force his appearance more soon, so the hunting becomes really annoying.
Here the problem: the DPS metre gives only an approximate value. It does not catch critical blows of knives, so that your real damage can be higher than the showed.
A good reason is, that the parts for the DPS metre are useful for another tool: the Goblin Tinkerer. For it you require three objects (the DPS metre itself), together with a stopwatch and metal detector. By means of that method one measured the most many DPS values of Terraria weapons.
Those ratnigs were made without any modifier of weapon, without bonuses of gear or without buffs and debuffs. Weapons without auto-swing were treated the same. If you want to test yourself, take ten seconds of continuous usage of the weapon, note the DPS each time, add them and share by means of ten.
Target dummies work well for testing, especially when dealing with weapons with area effect. They fail a bit with homing projectiles or chains, on the other hand.
To estimate makeup, various weapons tend too give the most stable damage. Magic has bigger potential, but it falls more commonly because of mistakes. The need for mana is cruel, empty mana drops your DPS, and waiting for mana to come back does not help.
The Emblem of the Magician gives about a fifteen percent boost to magic damage for everything, what well fits with high-damage magic builds. The Last Prism reaches between 5 000 and 7 000 DPS, even without Nebula armour.
Close to melee weapons, the most projectile ones do not gain a lot from fast bonuses of melee. The Blade of Grass, the Fetid Baghnakhs, the Edge of Real Night and the Terra Blade are exceptions. Whips and swords without projectiles belong to that group.
The Terraprisma is easy to farm DPS, because its projectile chases enemies. The Stellar Rage opens higher limits of damage, if all stars hit. The Phantom Fish reaches the highest numbers for single target damage in the whole game.
Potions and pools stack extra buffs over that.
There is also a module called DPSExtreme for players in multiplayer. It follows the DPS of the whole team and tracks damage statistics in real time. During boss fights, you will see live patterns, that show how much damage each player does compared to teammates.
Balancing lifesteal against pure DPS depends onyour play style, particular build and the current game phase.
