Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a third-person, turn-based game with some real-time elements. The player leads a group of explorers that researches a wild world. During fights one can choose to use an object, do a melee attack to win Skill Spots, or spend those spots on skills.
The combat stays exciting thanks to quick commands that ensure that the control almost never rests.
Clair Obscur: A Turn-Based Game to Stop the Paintress
The story takes place in a world where a creature called the Paintress every year paints a number. Each person that has that age or less dies. She started her countdown at 100, and now, after 67 years, the number reached 33.
The inhabitants of Lumière yearly send an expedition to the mainland to try to kill her, but none from the prior expeditions ever returned. However the past explorers left useful diaries and otehr aids for those that come later.
The main player, Gustave, has 33 years and he has only one year left to live. He joins the expedition together with Maelle and other companions. They together move on urgent research to brake the fatal cycle of the Paintress.
The group must learn to fight against almost impossible chances, while they follow the traces of the prior expeditions to hear what happened to them.
The game was created by a small team of programmers in France, at a studio called Sandfall Interactive. When they first showed it during the Xbox Games Showcase of 2024, it surprised many because it had the realistic look of western games and the mechanical style of Japanese ones. It builds on turn-based mechanics of games like Final Fantasy and Persona.
The main story carries more than 30 hours of content and costs 49,99 American dollars.
The game also is playable on Steam Deck. The team worked hard on compatibility, and it starts with a target frame rate of 45 FPS, which it indeed reaches. May 4th 2025 it reached an all-time peak of 145 063 simultaneous players on Steam.
Inside thirty-three days after release, it sold 3,3 millions of copies.
The praise that it received was truly big. It almost swept The Game Awards 2025 with a record high number of nominations and victories. It even passed Elden Ring to become the most awarded Game of the Year title of all time.
In the same week it was called Game of the Year at both The Game Awards and The Indie Game Awards, and it also won the prize Game of the Year from GameSpot for 2025. Deluxe Edition is available for PS5. Moreover there is a visual option that improves the weapon of Gustave, Cruleram, by means of new bright impact inseveral colours, included red, green, purple, cyan and gold.
