The stats of Speed in Pokemon determine which one moves first in every turn of fight. That with higher Speed goes before. Although it seems simple, in competitive play it has big weight.
Imagine two dragons that stand against one another outside. One has 120 special attack together with 100 Speed. The second reaches 130 special attack, but only 90 Speed.
How Speed Works in Pokémon
Although the second strikes more strongly, the faster dragon benefits attacking first and beating it before it can respond. Like this Speed commonly beats pure force.
The stat Speed does not relate truly to the run of Pokemon. More it is like reaction time or attack speed. Simply said, it shows how quickly Pokemon go from hearing the order of the coach to doing it.
So it is closer to reflex skills than to real moving Speed.
Deoxys in his form Rush ranks as the fastest Pokemon with base Speed of 180. No other reaches that hieght. Right after follows Ninjask with 160, later Pheromosa at 151.
Regieleki deserves attention because of his huge 200 base Speed, which makes it the fastest in Generation 9. Talonflame, on the other hand, has 126 base Speed, which quite a lot beats almost everything in battles.
Priority of Speed adds a new layer. There are 13 separate levels of priority, that go from +5 to -7. Moves with higher priority always happen first, no matter the stats of Speed.
When both Pokemon choose moves of same priority, then the actual Speed decides the order.
Tiers of Speed group Pokemon with near values of Speed. They help players in contests guess which of them can beat the others. The value of one alone spot in Speed depends on how close are the stats of two Pokemon.
At very fast or very slow, one spot almost does not matter. But four those in the centre, it can decide everything.
Some skills change the Speed in unusual ways. Steam Engine belongs only to the line of evolution of Rolycoly. When Pokemon with that skill receive attack of Fire- or Water-type, its Speed jumps very high.
Coalossal in maximum Speed at level 50 normally has 90, but after setting of Steam Engine it reaches 360. That beats even the maximum Speed of Regieleki at 277 insame level.
Pokemon GO works a bit differently. Here no one has a Speed stat. The only stats in that game are Stamina, Attack and Defence.
