⚔ Melee and caster comparison grid
Caster Vitality
Strength reaches gear, Dexterity stays near gear needs, Energy usually stays base, and Vitality receives nearly all spare points.
Max Block
Dexterity scales upward with level because total block uses level in the denominator, then leftover points go to Vitality.
Melee Gear
Strength and Dexterity must cover weapons and armor first; extra Dexterity can improve attack rating for weapon builds.
Mana Lean
Energy investment is mostly for Energy Shield or leveling comfort, trading raw life for a larger mana pool.

🛡 Block and gear reference
| Target | Formula or rule | Why it matters | Common use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Total block | Shield block x (Dex - 15) / (Level x 2) | Higher level requires more Dexterity for the same block chance. | Paladin, Amazon, Necro shield builds |
| Block cap | 75 percent maximum | More displayed block does not raise total block above the cap. | Max block respecs |
| Strength | Enough for final gear after bonuses | Extra Strength rarely beats more Vitality unless build damage scales from it. | Spirit Monarch, heavy armor, melee weapons |
| Dexterity | Gear need or block need, whichever is higher | Weapon builds may add more for attack rating or bow damage. | Shields, phase blades, bows, javelins |
| Energy | Base for most builds | Hard Energy reduces Vitality unless mana scaling is the actual target. | Energy Shield Sorceress, leveling comfort |

💡 Attribute tips
Attribute allocation in Diablo 2 determine how a character performs in the game. Attribute allocation affects how much damage a character can take. Attribute allocation also affect the types of equipment that a player can utilize.
If players does not allocate attributes apropiately, they may find themselves unable to use there favorite weapon or armor. Many players make mistake when allocating attributes for their characters. For instance, players often allocate attributes into Energy rather than Strength or Vitality.
How to Allocate Attributes in Diablo 2
Strength and Dexterity is two of the main attributes that players must allocate to access the gear that they require. Players need to allocate Strength to access certain armor and weapons. Players also need to allocate Dexterity to access certain armor and weapons.
Vitality is an attribute that determines how much life a player’s character have. Energy is another attribute that determine how much mana a player’s character has, but it is rarely allocated unless the player intend to use the Energy Shield skill. The calculator included in this guide will help players to allocate attributes apropiately to their characters.
Players will need to input their character’s class, level, number of quest points, and gear requirements into the calculator. The calculator will then calculate how many attribute points the player has left for the attribute Vitality. Furthermore, the calculator will also calculate whether a player’s Dexterity is sufficient for achieving a specific block chance with their shield.
This calculator will help to ensure that players dont waste any attribute points by accounting for the attribute point calculation that are necessary for their character. Players earn quest point by completing quests in the game. By completing the quests for the Lam Esen tome, players will earn fifteen free attribute points.
These attribute points can be used to meet gear requirements rather than using a character’s level to meet those requirements. Most players will use these points to meet their Strength requirement. Additionally, players will use these points to increase their Dexterity to increase their blocking capability with their shield.
The player’s Dexterity attribute, the player’s shield, and the character’s level calculate the block chance for a player’s character. The formula for calculating block chance has the character’s level in the denominator. This means that the higher the level of the player’s character, the lower the block chance that their character will have.
Therefore, a player will have to have higher Dexterity for their character to have a seventy-five percent chance to block enemies at level eighty-five than they will need for a seventy-five percent chance at level ninety. The game calculator will ask the player for their shield’s block value and their desired block percentage. Using these values, it will calculate for the player the Dexterity that they will need to achieve their target block percentage.
Different character class will recieve a different amount of life from the attribute Vitality. A Barbarian character will receive four life for each point of Vitality. A Sorceress character will only receive two life for each point of Vitality.
Because the Barbarian will receive more life from Vitality than the Sorceress, the Barbarian will be able to increase their survivability more than the Sorceress can with the same amount of investment in the Vitality attribute. These difference are important to understand in order to allocate attributes apropiately to each character class. Many items provide bonus to the character’s attributes.
Items like charms, torches, and items from Annihilus will all provide players with extra attribute. These bonuses will allow the players not to have to allocate as many attribute points as their characters require to wear the gear. The calculator will include these bonuses in the calculations to ensure that players do not allocate too many attribute points into the Strength attribute.
Additionally, players should utilize the safety buffer field provided in the calculator. The safety buffer will ensure that players are able to wear their gear even if they change some of there equipment. One of the most common mistake that players make in the game is to misallocate their attributes.
For instance, if a player allocates a significant portion of their attributes into Dexterity to increase their block chance, they may leave themselves with not enough points in the Vitality attribute to provide for the characters survivability. If they do not have enough points in the Vitality attribute, they will have a small life pool for their character. The grid comparison included in the tool will help players to understand the relation between the different attributes.
The reference tables included in this guide provide information for players regarding the block chance scaling for different levels of Dexterity and the value of quest points. Players do not need to memorize these reference tables, but they should review them to understand the logic of the game. The attribute calculator included in this guide is a helpful tool for players to avoid wasting their attribute points.
It also allows them to focus on their playstyle and the attributes that they would like to allocate to their character. Players must decide their playstyle; the calculator will help them to determine if there attribute allocation will support that playstyle.
