Solo Leveling is a South Korean web novel series written by Chugong. It first appeared on KakaoPage the digital platform of Cocoa for comics and fiction, at the start of July 25th 2016. Maybe you know it also under the title Only I Level Up.
The whole story twists around the adventures of Jinwoo in a world where monsters and dark forces always attack. What makes it so attractive is watching his rise from the weakest hunter among folks to one of the most mighty.
Solo Leveling: Story, Anime and Games
The story does not make the causes too complex. Jinwoo is shown as a weak folk, that finds himself in a cave, and here everything changes for him. The focus of the story rests on his change.
He is an average guy, until cracks start opening between his world and other worlds full of magic and danger; and suddenly he becomes a hunter. But here comes the main surprise: that system, that gives him power? It belongs only to him.
None other has access, what gives him an unfairly big edge form the first day, that none can copy.
At its core, Solo Leveling uses the desire for reaching dreams. The weak hero becomes an unstoppable force. He shows the doubters that they are wrong, beats every enemy, and the faces of evil disappear.
The game elements like leveling gave it real charm for readers. It hits all main spots, the leveling system, the isekai feel with monsters and different worlds, together with some truly gripping battle scenes. Early in the story, Jinwoo truly cares about his family, what gives him a base.
Even sew later the story twists to the action, and his family almost disappears from the focus. The side characters? They stay quite slim, in my view, there is not a lot of space for growth or breathing.
The first season of the anime ended a bit rushed and forgettable. It simply feels unfinished, cut right before side stories and character paths get their proper closing. Despite that, the web comic reached 14.3 billions of views globally, what says a lot about how this series touched folks.
Behind the scene, the third season already is in work, with designs of characters already available.
So here is Solo Leveling: Arise, the action RPG by Netmarble. It leads you through the whole path of Jinwoo, from his days as E-rank hunter, following him while he becomes a legend. The game has items to improve, level limits that you can pass, event caves and side missions.
A new version for computers, called Solo Leveling: Arise OVERDRIVE, appeared on Steam, though it does not make a big impression. Unlike the mobile version, this costs money up front and drops the gacha system. Even so, you must repeat the same caves to level up and gather materials for your gear, whatbecomes fast routine.
