Pokemon Radical Red is a modified version of FireRed. It offers updated graphics and much higher Damage than the original game. The hack was created by soupercell and it received big recognition in the community of ROM hacks.
What is Pokemon Radical Red?
Many look at it as the best ROM hack for FireRed, while others criticise its Damage and the new mechanics.
ROM hacks are modified versions of original games, so they are not official. They usually add improvements, puzzles and new elements to give a fresh twist to classic Pokemon adventures. Radical Red happens in the same region as FireRed and stays mostly faithful to the original story.
It appeared in 2020 and was built using the CFRU engine. Interestingly, it came out some weeks sooner than expected, because the creator rushed to release it before the own game of the creator of the engine.
The game carries a great collection of Pokemon from Gen 1 until Gen 8. In total are 614 Pokemon available through 54 route encounters. Some encounters adjust according to the hour of the day.
For instance, Vulpix appears during day on route 5, but overnight it becomes Alola Vulpix. Moreover the game has 49 extra fights, so enough challenges await.
Radical Red introduces fresh features, for instance DexNav, hidden nests, Johto gym leaders and several rivals. Through the whole game is good power limiting, that keeps the battles balanced so that the player does not become too strong too early. The game also scatters many various Pokemon, of mixed quality, through the routes, witch means that building a strong team requires a bit of thinking.
Several quality of life changes make the play smoother. The prices of potions were strongly lowered, including everything from basic Potions to Full Restores, Revivals and Paralysis remedies. The prices of decoys also dropped.
Eviolite now stops Pokemon from evolving, working as Everstone. Magma Armour, Steam Engine and Flame Body reduces the steps for eggs by four times instead of twice. Macho Brace and EV training items slightly reduce the pace than before.
After one becomes Champion, the catch rates rise widely.
Loading is pretty simple. One requires first an existing FireRed ROM. Later one can apply the patch using an online patcher provided by Karthik.
No complex steps are needed. The game also works on Steam Deck using EmuDeck. Install an emulator like mGBA using the desktop mode andimport the ROM to run pretty well.
Radical Red even has its own Showdown server for competitive play. It changed the way one looks at Damage in the whole ROM hack scene.
