The PS3 controller, known officially as DualShock 3 is made up of wireless parts that give a natural gaming experience. It carries pressure sensing in every button and very sensitive SIXAXIS motion sensing technology. Those pressure sensing buttons belong only to PS3 controllers, so other controllers do not have this feature.
To find an original DualShock 3 now, one must buy used and eBay serves as the usual store. Almost all PS3 controllers that one sells online are fake. Neither Sony or non-Sony controllers always work on PS3, even so.
PS3 DualShock 3 Controller: Real or Fake, Problems and Tips
A real PS3 controller does not always cost the most to play games. Third-party versions from brands like Dobe, Redragon, Hori, iPega and Nyko are sold right now. Branded wireless PS3 controllers last much longer tahn cheap unbranded pads, that mess up after some weeks.
The Retro Fighters Bluetooth PS3 controller belongs to the best third-party choices. It has a gyroscope, pressure sensing buttons and can wake the PS3 from sleep mode. The only downside is the slightly too strong rumble motors.
Third-party controllers usually come in two-packs with charging cables, double vibration, Bluetooth link and motion sensing along with improved joysticks. Some of those two-packs sell four around 26 dollars at Amazon.
Controllers from third parties can suffer crashes. Joysticks start drifting after a year, which makes characters stand still in games. Some new branded controllers press the D-pad, triangle and shoulder buttons right from the box.
The original DualShock 3 itself seems more likely to have problems than most other PlayStation controller models. Also the PS3 controller is quite small, which can give a slippery feeling, and the thumbsticks can stick over time.
The DualShock 4 works on PS3 wirelessly through Bluetooth without any adapter. However the PS button of DualShock 4 does not work on PS3. Adapters like the Brook Wingman XE allow every modern controller to be used on PS3, including PS4, PS5, Xbox and Switch controllers.
Such adapters themselves have great features. The Nintendo Power also works on PS3, but often lacks support for the home button.
For use on PC, programs like ScpToolkit offer a PC-friendly setup for the PS3 controller. Steam itself has an option for PlayStation config support in its controller settings. MotionJoy is other software, that still needs a Bluetooth adapter.
Steam does not support the DualShock 3 gyro or analog face buttons naturally. If pairing creates troubles, leave the PS3 controller plugged into USB for 10 to 20 minutes tocharge and then reset the PS3 for help.
