💡 Tip: In Java Edition, attack cooldown matters. A fully charged sword hit deals 100% damage, but spam clicking at 0% charge deals only about 20% of base + 1 damage. Always wait for the attack indicator to fill. Axes have a slower cooldown (0.8–1.0 attacks/sec) but deal more burst damage per hit.
💡 Critical Hits: You must be falling (not on ground) and NOT sprinting. Critical hits multiply the final base + enchant damage by 1.5x. You can jump and strike at the peak of descent for consistent crits.
💡 Armor Formula (Java): damage reduction = defense / (defense + (2 + toughness/4) if damage is high). The protection enchantment (EPF) further reduces damage by 4% per EPF point, capped at 80% (EPF 20). Full Protection IV on all 4 pieces = 16 EPF = 64% extra reduction.

damage in minecraft shows hurt from attacks or natural events. Players and creatures have health points that drop when one receives them. Every two health points match to one full heart.

Like this players have 20 points so fully 10 hearts.

How Damage Works in Minecraft

Every item in the game has a base of 1 damage, what is half of heart. So a weapon with “+6 attack damage” indeed gives 7 points fully. It reaches 3.5 hearts.

The program uses whole number calculation for damage.

Among the most powerful weapons, netherite sharpness V axe gives the maximum damage by means of one blow. It causes 13 points, around 6.5 hearts against unarmored target. For best impact over tiem, even so, netherite sword stays the best choice.

Also pointed stone can deal big damage in special setups. Stacked TNT rounds maybe cause even bigger.

In version 1.9, tools received a cooldown, that stops players from hitting too quickly. Axes won extra 2 points of damage compared to earlier versions, what makes them more difficult than swords for use. The cooldown for axes is long, and they lose 2 points of durability per blow instead of only 1 as with swords.

Full diamond armor absorbs 80 percent of damage from every blow. Bare fists cause 1 point, so only half of heart. With full health and whole armor, foot kicking almost does not work unless won repeats it over and over.

Fall damage is based on the height in blocks, that one falls. Stalagmites are very dangerous, because fall on one causes double fall damage, what can quickly kill. It affects also creatures.

Commonly happens a mistake, especially in Bedrock Edition, when the game believes, that player falls although no. Passage through nether gate can create that, because coordinates differ between overworld and nether, like this the program assumes a fall.

The wither effect is an unpleasant kind of damage. It removes 1 health point all 2 seconds at level I from skeleton attacks. At level II from wither heads, it strikes every other second.

Wither roses give the effect to any creature, that touches them. Unlike poison, wither can truly kill on every difficulty. It also darkens the health bar, what makes it hard to check remaining health.

The only way to notice it is search white fire to the left of every heart.

The command /damage appeared in version 1.18.10 and allows players to deal precise damage to certain entities. It does not simply change health values. Rather, it triggers thekey logic of the game to fake real damage.
