Final Fantasy Tactics is a tactical RPG that Square developed and released for the PlayStation. The game appeared in Japan in June 1997, and later in North America in January 1998; here Sony Computer Entertainment released it. It is the first title of the Tactics series in the larger Final Fantasy series.
Although it really differs from other known entries it however proudly bears the name Final Fantasy and showed other big success in the PlayStation catalog of Square.
Final Fantasy Tactics: Story, Gameplay and New Version
The story has a more mature feel, not usually tied to Final Fantasy. It feels darker than the majority of other Final Fantasy games, and one commonly calls it the best plot in any FF game. The gameplay is very deep…
Maybe the deepest of all titles of Final Fantasy. After one plays it, the main series games almost satrt to look like simplified copies.
The fights work differently than in most other Final Fantasy games. In typical entries, you simply face monsters without real attention to positioning or to the area. Final Fantasy Tactics entirely overturns that.
It uses experience points based on done actions, allows you to revive units during fight, and gives a four-turn limit to save a falling unit before it dies for good. There is a big jump in trouble at the fourth mission, but after that the fights stay pretty easy for a good time. The fight against Wiegraf at Castle Riovanes is among the most difficult in the hole game.
There are more than 20 jobs to master, among them white mage, black mage, dragon rider and many other classic roles from Final Fantasy. One can learn hundreds of skills. After a skill is learned, it still works even if you switch to another job.
That gives big freedom to try various ideas and find the best combinations for your party.
The game grew in popularity after its release in 2007 as Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions for the PSP. That version added new clips, scenes and jobs. Now, Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles will appear September 30th 2025 for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5 and PC.
It offers fully voiced dialog, nicely improved graphics and countless improvements to the gameplay. Steam is the only launcher for the PC version, and it works perfectly on the Steam Deck.
The Ivalice Chronicles received 88 out of 100 at OpenCritic and very positive reviews on Steam, with fans calling it a nice refresh of an already great game. It faithfully and lovingly brings this deep, complex classic to modern systems. Nods to the lore of Final Fantasy are scattered through the whole experience.
The Deluxe Edition carries extra items, for example the Academic Blade, Academic Beret, Academic Tunic, Ring of Aptitude, Phoenix Down and special gear for Ramza. The original game already was very complete, both indesign and in story.
