LaCie does not make Hard Drive units itself. The company for a long time fills their cases with Hard Drive units from Seagate, Western Digital, Toshiba and Hitachi, before they appear in stores. It mainly offers outside Hard Drive units that have nice looks.
Because of that, part of the cost goes to the brand and the fancy shape of the case, instead of to the Hard Drive itself.
LaCie External Hard Drives: Uses, Good Points and Problems
In the cases of LaCie you commonly find models of Seagate. For instance some 2.5-inch outside Hard Drive units are based on the Rosewood family of Seagate with SMR technology for Hard Drive units. Because the insides are average Hard Drive units, that makes them quite sensitive.
A small shock or vibration is enough to break a spinning Hard Drive, especially if it runs at that moment.
LaCie has long been seen as the mainstream brand for users of Apple. It has a habit of quickly launching Hard Drive units in cases with fast connections from Apple. The Hard Drive units of LaCie work with USB-C, what makes the moving of data during trips easy.
Also some versions have Thunderbolt connections, and that motivated many creative experts to choose them instead of competitros.
The Rugged line of LaCie enjoys big popularity with filmmakers and other creators. Those Hard Drive units are built to last through falls, blows, dust and even rain. For instance, the Rugged Mini delivers 1 TB of space in a very small portable form, connecting by USB 3.0 and reaching up to 130 MB/s.
That speed will not impress compared too SSD units, but as a Hard Drive it works well for long-term storage of music or big collections of content.
The Rugged Hard Drive units cover a wide range of types, from usual 5400 rpm Hard Drive units to faster SSD units with steady transfer speeds up to 510 MB/s. For more than a decade they got their name because of their strength against shocks, water and dust.
For desktop use, the LaCie d2 Professional offers big storage and fast speeds, good for 4K videos, photo files and backups. The big 1 TB desktop Hard Drive costs a lot, gives typical Hard Drive transfer speeds, but includes several built-in features for media experts in one handy package. The biggest Hard Drive units of LaCie currently reach 60 TB, aimed at creative professionals, that need reliable storage.
Even a four-year-old LaCie Hard Drive can still work well. Even so, some of them still fail. One of them famously died during a filming course, removing all the filmed material.
Problems can happen after updates of macOS. Sometimes the Hard Drive simply does not show, when plugged into a MacBook. LaCie offers a data recovery service, that includes backup Hard Drive units and recovered data without extra payments, what makesa good safety net.
SSD units beat Hard Drive units in speed, portability and fewer failures. Even so, among Hard Drive units LaCie stays a reliable option. The aluminum body and simple design adds to the appeal, although the price is a bit higher than at rivals like G-Technology or Western Digital.
