Dark and Darker is a thrilling role-playing game made by the Korean studio Ironmace, that started in early access in August 2023. It mixes parts of underground adventures and classic role-playing experiences everything happening in a dark medieval wild world. When one says that it is a ruthless heavy fantasy FPS underground PvPvE journey, that well describes it, truly it has sharp teeth.
Everything in the game takes ideas from sword- and magic-worlds similar to Dungeons and Dragons, with classes for characters, spells and drinks. Even so here it becomes truly attractive: the team of Ironmace tied that with fast-paced shots borrowed from titles like Escape from Tarkov. The result is that tough system, in that you dive in rooms full of traps together with friends, to hunt creatures and take loot.
How Dark and Darker works
The key? You are not the only one. Other players do the same, and final gates to flee exist only some.
A narrow deadly area. Similar to rules of fight actually, force teh players to gather step by step, surrounding each of them.
With partners the game truly shines. You need courage, fast thinking and a bit of trick to reach wonderful prey and beat the wild monsters almost waiting in the shades. Alone players experience the whole challenge: natural dangers, tough NPC troublemakers and rivals ready to push you for their advantage.
Gold plays a big role hear. It allows trades with NPCs or other players, and you will need a lot to improve your gear. Better weapons, armor, tools, everything requires it.
Earning gold turns into a fun cycle of spending and growth.
Right now the game is free to play on Steam and the Epic Games Store, after a reveal during the Summer Game Fest. The free level gives one character, entry to normal mode through all areas, ability to do missions and space to keep your loot. Want more?
Legendary subscription opens High Rank Dungeons, bigger trade bonuses, extra characters and shared storage for them. One recent change: the Goblin map now is only for duo games, what truly was for a long time wanted by the community.
There is also a mobile version in the works. Dark and Darker Mobile was shown with a trailer during Gamescom Opening Night Live, and the global launch likely will come during the first half of the year. Even so do not expect that it will be the same as the computer version, it will include some built-in differences fromthe PC version.
The game did not lack its parts of conflicts. The group that made it came from Nexon and received warm attention because of bringing ideas that they created there. The model of free play attracted criticism, but the makers accepted that and work to fix it.
Balance between classes was debated, with changing best strategies that swing between buffs and nerfs of certain builds, sometimes making the game feel uneven. Glad updates came after the Steam launch, but some basic parts of life-quality yet lack. Interestingly, tests on more than 2,040 spots show that higher Luck stat does not truly help for better Damage loot quality.
